Build in Bold New Ways

About us

Canvas is a construction technology company revolutionizing productivity by building an entirely new class of robotic machinery. Canvas robots transform tasks traditionally performed with hand tools by automating the physical installation of materials in interior spaces. By harnessing the power of advanced robotics, data and AI, Canvas accelerates interior construction while enhancing worker safety and efficiency. Our flagship product, the 1200CX, is a worker-controlled drywall robot that delivers consistent, high-quality wall finishes, completing drywalling faster and more cost-effectively than traditional manual methods. Canvas is redefining the future of interior construction. Interior construction is still heavily reliant on manual labor, facing increasing challenges due to a growing skilled labor shortage, and resulting in delays, higher costs, and inconsistent quality. While machinery has revolutionized exterior construction, the tight spaces and dynamic environment has left interior work to hand tools creating significant gaps in efficiency, safety, and speed. There’s a massive opportunity to establish a new category of machinery for interior trades by using the precision of robotics. Canvas is leading this transformation starting with the $40B drywall finishing trade. Our worker-controlled robots combine advanced robotics, data, and AI to streamline interior construction, delivering precise, high-quality finishes faster than the traditional manual process. Backed by Menlo Ventures and Brick & Mortar Ventures, Canvas was founded by Kevin Albert and Maria Telleria and has a world-class team of robotics veterans from Boston Dynamics, SRI, Apple, Otherlab, and MIT.

Affordable housing is one of our our nation’s most critical challenges, impacting the financial health and quality of life for millions across the US. On Friday, I had the honor of joining experts and leaders driving change at the Ivory Prize Housing Innovation Summit. This inspiring group of innovators shares a collective vision for the future, where home ownership is accessible and serves as the backbone of stable and thriving lives for all. Canvas was selected by Ivory Innovations as one of the top eleven companies supporting the affordable housing movement in 2024. This recognition reaffirms our commitment of leveraging robotics to make building construction more efficient, while improving the conditions for those creating them. While I usually focus on the mechanics of how physical work gets done, it was incredibly refreshing to take a step back and gain a broader perspective on how new innovations are disrupting the entire value chain. Many of my peers were not only tackling construction-related problems, but also critical issues in home financing, permit regulation, housing policy, and workforce training. And these solutions are not just the future - they are here today. From a government-operated Housing Building Fund in Maryland to streamlined ADU incentives in California, these incredible people are hyper-focused on driving impact now. I’d like to congratulate the other ten finalists for their achievements thus far (Capsul, On3, Villa Homes, Foyer, HIAS, HON Partners, MONTGOMERY COUNTY HOUSING AUTHORITY, The City of San Diego, Compass Working Capital, and FirstRepair), and wish them many more to come. Here are some key takeaways that really stuck with me: - Home ownership is one of the largest levers for wealth creation that only a subset of Americans have access to - Supporting people to invest their capital in home ownership also drives investment in local businesses, further strengthening communities and creating opportunities - Home ownership, by improving individual livelihoods, also makes us economically stronger as a nation Thank you to Ivory Innovations for bringing us together to make a real difference. If we can collectively learn to build better, we can enable everyone to live better.

Canvas didn’t start as a robotics company - we started as drywall contractors. We learned about the challenges that drywallers and contractors face every day - the sore backs, long hours, and constant pressure to meet deadlines with limited resources. We learned that spraying and sanding is physically exhausting, wearing down even the most experienced crews over the years. Most importantly we learned that the work itself, while absolutely essential in building our future, has not evolved with technology. It’s the same manual exhausting process, day in and day out. We believed there had to be a better way, so we created the world’s first drywall robot. The Canvas 1200CX empowers those who build our world to complete Level 4 and 5 drywall finishes in 40% fewer touchpoints, reducing physical strain while mitigating the industry's acute labor shortage. The industrial workforce is shrinking, and the world is not ready for it. "Last year, the industry needed to hire an estimated 546,000 more workers to balance supply and demand, but more people are leaving than entering" (Associated Builders and Contractors). A shortage of construction laborers will lead to: 1. Critical Infrastructure Delays, hindering access to essential services 2. Compromised Quality & Safety, leading to more structural failures 3. Worker Burnout and Shortage, leading to more worker injuries 4. Increased Inflationary Pressures, stemming from higher costs Throughout my education and career, I’ve always believed that technology designed to operate in conjunction with workers will be necessary to sustain our future. At Canvas, we're on a mission to empower construction workers with robotics making the work healthier and more efficient for the user, while attracting the next generation of workers with innovative tools. Canvas 1200CX Launch Featured in ENR! At our recent launch event in San Francisco, we unveiled the 1200CX, our latest and most compact drywall machine. "We want to do for interior construction what the steam shovel did for digging and excavating," said founder & CEO Kevin Albert at the event. The 1200CX is built for efficiency, performing precise level 4 and 5 drywall finishes in a fraction of the typical steps. Darren Bechtel, an early investor in Canvas and founder of Brick & Mortar Ventures, added, "They focused on the dull, dirty, and dangerous work—perfect for a robot—allowing people to focus on more exciting, complex jobs."
