A new study from American, Canadian, and Irish researchers uncovers how Big Oil has infiltrated universities and climate research. The paper, published on WIREs Climate Change, provides different examples across different universities such as Princeton's Carbon Mitigation Initiative sponsored by BP and Enbridge Centre for Corporate Sustainability where Enbridge was able to stop funding at any moment. Enbridge used this leverage to influence students and staff awards and garner good PR. Big Oil has changed the minds of countless to become climate change deniers by using their position of funding. As the backers, they were able to puppeteer studies to reflect what they wanted the public to perceive about the oil industry's effect on the climate. The recently released 2024 Planetary Health Check reports on the health of the planet through the lens of nine indicators. For more in-depth information, visit the website below. Three of the indicators remain at safe levels: Ocean Acidification, Atmospheric Aerosol Loading, and Stratospheric Ozone Depletion. Unfortunately, six of the indicators have surpassed safe levels: Climate Change, Biosphere Integrity, Land System Change, Freshwater Change, Biogeochemical Flows, and the Introduction of Novel Entities. When indicators surpass safe levels, it negatively affects the planet's safety and the people who reside on it. The variables used to study the indicators show that as the climate crisis continues, the indicators will continue to rise further above safe levels, making the Earth sicker and sicker.
