The UN Cybercrime Convention is a global treaty that aims to reduce the prevalence of the online sexual exploitation of children (OSEAC) by providing law enforcement agencies with the tools to domestically and internationally collaborate with other agencies to fight against trafficking and OSEAC-related crimes. If approved, the convention would be the first legal framework to be debated and accepted by consensus among all UN member states. Some elements of the treaty include standardizing the global definition of a child and Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), criminalizing CSAM-related activities, modernizing laws to combat online child sexual exploitation, and ensuring the rightful prosecution of offenders. “Adopting these measures will allow for stronger coordination and collaboration between law enforcement agencies across countries, ensuring they have access to the resources needed to investigate and stop child victimization and create a global network that can better activate to identify cybercriminals and bring them to justice from continent to continent.” -End OSEAC Survivor’s Council, from a letter written in support of the convention The General Assembly is expected to vote on this treaty by the end of the year. We urge the U.S. government to join as a signatory. ChildFund International Thorn International Justice Mission Raven #WeArePACT
Check out this new case study we reviewed with ECPAT International and ECPAT France: The #GlobalBoysInitiative case studies document the diverse approaches of practitioners worldwide when working with boys from various contexts and communities. Each case study highlights promising practices and lessons learned, while addressing the vital question: “How can we work with children and young boys at risk or survivors of sexual exploitation and abuse through a gender-sensitive approach?” From the report: "ECPAT France found that adopting a non-judgemental approach is essential to building trust and putting children at the centre of the relationship. By adopting a child-centred approach, the team provides all the information necessary for the children to make informed and safe decisions, while always respecting their autonomy and ability to make decisions affecting them." #WeArePACT
With 50 million children on the move worldwide, including 13 million refugees and asylum seekers, the need for stronger policies and practices to better protect these children is more urgent than ever. ECPAT International's new #GlobalBoysInitiative case study with ECPAT France and PACT explores how frontline workers in Calais, France, support at-risk boys and survivors of sexual exploitation and abuse amidst dangerous environments and unpredictable timeframes. In this case study, frontline workers offer important lessons on how to build trust with boys on the move, while providing support that respects their individual experiences and dignity. 👉 Find out more: https://bit.ly/EGBICS #ECPAT #ProtectChildren #ProtectBoys #ChildSexualExploitation #ChildSexualAbuse

📢 YESSS!!! Meta is finally taking action to hide teens’ followers/following lists from sextortion scammers. 🔥 48 hours after I appeared on Australian national news—calling on Mark Zuckerberg directly to implement this safeguard—Meta announces this new privacy feature. 🎯 Meta announced today: “Sextortion scammers often use the following and follower lists of their targets to try and blackmail them. Now, accounts we detect as showing signals of scammy behavior won’t be able to see people’s follower or following lists, removing their ability to exploit this feature.” 📈 At least 39 teens have died by suicide while being targeted by this scam in the past 2 years. 📲 “These potential sextorters also won’t be able to see lists of accounts that have liked someone’s posts, photos they’ve been tagged in, or other accounts that have been tagged in their photos.” 👉 I’ve been calling on Meta to hide these lists for 10 months. While they are only hiding these from scammy accounts, there is still no privacy setting for all users to keep their network private. ⚠️ ALSO: Last week, Meta removed over 800 Facebook Groups and 820 accounts that were affiliated with Yahoo Boys and were attempting to organize, recruit and train new sextortion scammers. ⛔️ Yahoo Boys are now banned under Meta’s Dangerous Organizations policy—after I called on them publicly to do so. 🙏🏻 Thankful for this LinkedIn community and the pressure we’ve put on tech giants to safeguard teens from the worst scam in history.

🗣️ You need to know about these 5 different types of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA)‼️ IBSA is a broad term that encompasses the creation, manipulation, theft, extortion, threatened or actual distribution, or the use of images for a sexual purpose without meaningful consent. 1. Instagram is “commonly known to be a leading site visited by pedophiles looking for images of children,” PACT CEO Lori Cohen tells the DailyMail in their recently published article. Jeremy Bieber, popstar Justin Bieber’s father, has been accused of ignoring this troubling fact by sharing an average of a photo a week since birth on his 6 year old daughter’s instagram account (which has to be run by her parents, as minors under 13 are prohibited from using the app), some of which include the child in bikinis or revealing cheer outfits. Research conducted by the DailyMail highlights disturbing comments made by some of the account’s 351,000+ followers, and suggests that 20 percent of Bay's followers are accounts registered as male, almost entirely aged between 18 and 34. They report that photos that get the most likes are those with her brother Justin– and the ones where she is seen in a bikini or cheer outfits. 'A parent would not set loose their bikini-clad child in a room full of pedophiles,' Protect All Children from Trafficking's Lori Cohen told the Mail. 'Why would they post an image of that same child online where they will potentially be viewed and - even more frightening - contacted by many thousands of them?'
