#ThrowbackThursday to Sept. 6, 2014, when Newport News Shipbuilding christened Virginia-class submarine USS John Warner (#SSN785) in front of about 7,000 people. The submarine’s namesake – a US Navy and United States Marine Corps veteran and a former U.S. senator for Virginia and secretary of the Navy – was in attendance with his wife Jeanne – the ship’s sponsor. The ceremony ended with fireworks and a laser light show. It was an honor for NNS to celebrate the occasion with the late John Warner, who was a tireless supporter of the Navy and our shipbuilders. Do you have any memories from that day 10 years ago?

Game day was a success! The first home game of the season for Navy Football on Saturday was one for the books as the Navy Midshipmen emerged victorious against the Bucknell Bison 49-21.⚓🏈 Andy Green, executive vice president and president of Mission Technologies, a division of HII, received the game ball, presented by Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk. We also gave out thousands of cool foam hats made to look like our ships, which were a hit with fans! As the nation’s largest shipbuilder and only builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, HII was proud to sponsor the game and support the future Naval officers who, at some point in their career, will likely serve on one of our ships to defend our nation. As shipbuilders work through the intense summer months, Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, division is continuing to find ways to stay cool. The chill water air conditioning units installed on George M. Neal (#DDG131) is a pilot program to help combat heat stress. The chill water units in the ship creates a cool down zone for shipbuilders to use during the day. They are strategically placed within the ship to lower temperatures in key spaces. This is one of many initiatives in place that will help keep our shipbuilders safe and free from heat related injuries.

Less than two years after design efforts began, HII continues testing the third generation of its medium-class unmanned undersea vehicle (MUUV), the REMUS 620. In recent sea trials, conducted on Aug. 14 in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, a REMUS 620 successfully completed a mission outfitted with a KRAKEN MINSAS 120 Synthetic Aperture Sonar, delivering high-resolution imagery of a mission target. “We gained a lot of valuable operational data using the KRAKEN MINSAS 120,” said Adrian Gonsalves, lead engineer for the REMUS 620. “These sea tests, combined with our extensive use of hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop simulations, allowed us to greatly accelerate the continuous improvements to this third generation MUUV.” HII’s Mission Technologies, a division of HII will deliver the first two production REMUS 620s to a customer later this month.
