Because reading is believing.

About us

At Lit, we're creating a world where every kid, everywhere, is a reader. We specialize in helping leaders design, implement, and sustain every element of their reading program, from the instructional materials in teachers’ hands to the data systems that drive decision-making. We offer comprehensive 360° audits of your current reading ecosystem, "Learn & Design" professional learning modules where your team can investigate and redesign systems, structures, and materials, and side-by-side implementation support. Today, just one-third of U.S. fourth graders are reading proficiently. Research tells us that 95% can with high-quality, research-aligned instruction. It's not where we're born that matters. It's how we're taught to read that matters. Our team helps translate the "science of reading" (the research about how we learn to read) into the science of teaching reading. And we partner with school system leaders to implement those research-backed practices at scale. To date, our work has impacted more than 50,000 students, with 97% of those students identifying as students of color.

At Lit, our commitment to research and equity isn’t just a talking point; it drives everything we do. We developed the Reading Ecosystem Alignment Diagnostic (READ) to define the systems, structures, and routines we'd expect to see in a high-quality, research-aligned reading system. We use the READ to help leaders understand the strengths and opportunities of their current system during our Lit Quality Reviews. Our Learn & Design modules help leaders engage with the research, building their knowledge alongside their confidence to make design decisions. And with our ongoing implementation support, we continuously anchor leaders in the “why,” helping them connect research to real classroom outcomes. That’s why 95% of our partners say we’re helping them become more informed, research-driven leaders. Ready to align your reading systems to research? We spend a lot of time in classrooms and hallways with leaders, helping them understand the gap between their current practices and research-backed strategies. Something we've learned? Understanding the research first makes it easier to step away from those long-standing practices the research no longer supports. In our latest Lit Knowledge List, we dive into a topic that leaders are often surprised to revisit: sight words. These resources helped us shift our perspective on sight words and adjust our practices to align with how our brains actually store words. You’ll find some of our most bookmarked resources on sight word reading and orthographic mapping. Use Lit Knowledge Lists to: 📗 Get up to speed on topics related to the science of reading. 📘 Discover readings, podcasts, and videos perfect for team learning. 📕 Find pre-reads for your professional development sessions. If leaders need to understand the research about reading, where do you start? Introducing: Lit’s Knowledge Lists! 🎉 Our Knowledge Lists round up the key resources that underpin our beliefs about reading, reading instruction, and instructional equity. Originally created for our team to dive deep into the research, these lists have evolved into a tool for our partners to explore for their own learning and professional development. Now, we're sharing them with the world. Use them to: ✔️ Get familiar with the research and discover the contributors to the knowledge base. ✔️ Reflect on the implications for your own reading system design. ✔️ Find readings that challenge your team’s thinking and foster shared learning. ✔️ Pick podcasts, articles, or videos for engaging professional learning sessions. Our first list, focused on Instructional Equity and the Science of Reading, is below. It features classics like reporting from American Public Media and the Reading League's Science of Reading: Defining Guide. We've also included a recent article we love about, "What Matters Most? Toward a Robust and Socially Just Science of Reading" from Reading Research Quarterly. Dive in and let’s learn together! 📚✨

Committing to the shifts supported by the science of reading begins with understanding the why—and it starts with leaders. When leaders understand the science of reading and how it translates into practice, they’re empowered to make confident, research-aligned decisions that stick. Because when you understand the why, the "what" becomes worth the effort. We’ve never met a leader who doesn’t believe in research. But in the rush to support students, it's easy to prioritize building teacher knowledge first. At Lit, we focus on developing leaders’ and coaches’ knowledge and skills so they can invest more effectively in their teachers. This month, we’re excited to share some of the research we use for coaching and professional learning. We’re reading and research nerds (and we’re owning it!) who love sharing what we learn with the world. Let's rewrite the tale that it's only teachers who need to nerd out over the research. To kick things off, here are the four questions we always ask when sifting through resources: https://lnkd.in/ezet-rD7 #scienceofreading #taleswetell #readingresearch

In TikTok hashtags, conference session titles, and product ads, the “science of reading” prevails. But what does it really mean to transform reading instruction aligned to science—at scale? What common “tales” are getting in the way? ✍️ After years of transforming reading systems, we know that real change starts with shifting mindsets. It’s about rewriting the stories we tell ourselves as leaders—such as, "We have HQIMs; that's all we need," or, "We have to get better at everything, all at once." This year, we're sharing how we help leaders rewrite these common tales with research, reflection, and action. We’ll also be sharing the resources we use along the way. Ready to dive in? On this #LiteracyDay, we're proud to be part of the collective movement to create a more just and literate world. Literacy isn't just about the joy of reading books (although our bookshelves are bulging); it's a fundamental human right. Learning to read is the starting point for understanding, discovery, and advocacy. It's critical to navigating the world and finding our place and voice within it. If literacy is to be truly liberatory, then students of color and students living in poverty deserve access to reading instruction that’s rooted in research. Thank you to all the families, educators, policymakers, and advocates who are creating a more literate world every day. 📚 We're proud to work alongside you!

Does investing in early literacy support actually yield outcomes? This article from the Indianapolis Recorder shares the most recent results from our partners at Adelante Schools. As one of our longest clients, we've watched this team do the work of understanding the research, investing in leaders and teachers, and using data to drive decision-making. And they've done it with a true commitment to their families and a burning belief that this work is the pathway to instructional equity. ✨ Congratulations to all the Adelante kids and families in Indianapolis! We can't wait to see what the next year brings. ✨ https://lnkd.in/eSKVNP_A

We believe deliberate rest helps our team be their best. That means being their best for our partners and the kids and families they serve each year on our quest to ensure every kid, everywhere, is a reader. It's one reason we include 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘓𝘦𝘴𝘴 by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang in our employee onboarding. And why we intentionally plan time away from airplanes and Zoom when our coaching schedules allow. Can't wait to see what our team crafts up next! #lifeatlit #deliberaterest #rest

It's Friday at Lit and that means I'll be spending the day with my 70-something mom. We recently used one of my "Summer Fridays" to take a glassmaking class where we spent an hour molding glass, trying not to catch our sleeves on fire, and groaning at our lack of skill. (I'm not kidding - it looked so easy when the instructor demonstrated it!) Our entire company takes Fridays off in the summer when our travel slows and we wrap early on Fridays throughout the year. It’s a privilege I didn’t know could exist and didn’t know how desperately I needed. These moments have been a lifeline for me - helping me build memories with my mom or tackle her appointments while also juggling two preschoolers and all the other things. And I always try to carve out part of the day just for me to hit a trail. And, funnily enough, I find the moment I'm solo hiking on a trail or walking past peonies in a nursery with my mom is often the moment my calm mind starts to untangle something I was struggling with earlier in the week. The ability to focus, to recharge, to lean in the other parts of my self helps me in all the other areas too. Today's mom mission? Dress shopping for an upcoming family wedding!

We have a common refrain at Lit: we're coaches, not consultants. Our goal is to work alongside our system partners, building their confidence and skills so they can lead their reading ecosystem when we're no longer with them. Our goal isn't to prescribe answers but to build your ability to make decisions that are aligned to research and in the best interests of children and families. ✨ And we love it when our partners feel it too! ✨ Thanks for taking the time to fill out our partner survey, Megan, and for all you do for the children and families in Indianapolis. If you want to know more about how Lit's expert, side-by-side coaching can support your reading ecosystem transformation... drop us a line! 👉 wearelit.org
