Because reading is believing.

About us

At Lit, we're creating a world where every kid, everywhere, is a reader. We specialize in helping leaders design, implement, and sustain every element of their reading ecosystem, from the instructional materials in teachers’ hands to the data systems that drive decision-making. Today, just one-third of U.S. fourth graders are reading profiently. Research tells us that 95% can with high-quality, research-aligned instruction. It's not where we're born that matters. It's how we're taught to read that matters. Our team helps translate the "science of reading" (the research about how we learn to read) into the science of teaching reading. And we partner with school system leaders to implement those research-backed practices at scale. To date, our work has impacted more than 50,000 students, with 96% of those students identifying as students of color.

Does investing in early literacy support actually yield outcomes? This article from the Indianapolis Recorder shares the most recent results from our partners at Adelante Schools. As one of our longest clients, we've watched this team do the work of understanding the research, investing in leaders and teachers, and using data to drive decision-making. And they've done it with a true commitment to their families and a burning belief that this work is the pathway to instructional equity. ✨ Congratulations to all the Adelante kids and families in Indianapolis! We can't wait to see what the next year brings. ✨ https://lnkd.in/eSKVNP_A

Our implementation support is designed to help leaders and their teams build the mindsets, skills, and systems to sustain a research-aligned reading ecosystem year after year. We celebrate the quick wins but know this work is about long-term capacity. ⚒ And we love it when our partners feel it too! Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback, Kelly. We've loved the chance to work alongside you and the team on behalf of kids and families in Indianapolis! Looking for a partner to build your team's reading system capacity? We believe deliberate rest helps our team be their best. That means being their best for our partners and the kids and families they serve each year on our quest to ensure every kid, everywhere, is a reader. It's one reason we include 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘓𝘦𝘴𝘴 by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang in our employee onboarding. And why we intentionally plan time away from airplanes and Zoom when our coaching schedules allow. Can't wait to see what our team crafts up next! #lifeatlit #deliberaterest #rest

It's Friday at Lit and that means I'll be spending the day with my 70-something mom. We recently used one of my "Summer Fridays" to take a glassmaking class where we spent an hour molding glass, trying not to catch our sleeves on fire, and groaning at our lack of skill. (I'm not kidding - it looked so easy when the instructor demonstrated it!) Our entire company takes Fridays off in the summer when our travel slows and we wrap early on Fridays throughout the year. It’s a privilege I didn’t know could exist and didn’t know how desperately I needed. These moments have been a lifeline for me - helping me build memories with my mom or tackle her appointments while also juggling two preschoolers and all the other things. And I always try to carve out part of the day just for me to hit a trail. And, funnily enough, I find the moment I'm solo hiking on a trail or walking past peonies in a nursery with my mom is often the moment my calm mind starts to untangle something I was struggling with earlier in the week. The ability to focus, to recharge, to lean in the other parts of my self helps me in all the other areas too. Today's mom mission? Dress shopping for an upcoming family wedding!

We have a common refrain at Lit: we're coaches, not consultants. Our goal is to work alongside our system partners, building their confidence and skills so they can lead their reading ecosystem when we're no longer with them. Our goal isn't to prescribe answers but to build your ability to make decisions that are aligned to research and in the best interests of children and families. ✨ And we love it when our partners feel it too! ✨ Thanks for taking the time to fill out our partner survey, Megan, and for all you do for the children and families in Indianapolis. If you want to know more about how Lit's expert, side-by-side coaching can support your reading ecosystem transformation... drop us a line! 👉 wearelit.org

✨ See to Believe✨ At Lit, we talk a lot about creating "see to believe" moments with our partners. Moments that help teams see and feel the impact of a change or practice before they have to implement it on their own. We use that same idea for our own professional learning. At a recent staff off-site, a tennis ball challenge helped us "see the believe" the impact of introducing small, measurable, incremental changes when pursuing improvement. (Similar to this activity shared online: https://lnkd.in/gQ_xAwQK) By introducing one change at a time and measuring the impact, we were able to move quickly pivot toward our goal. It didn't hurt that it was pretty fun too. #seetobelieve #lifeatlit

🏫 "And how to do it at scale." 🏫 Our ears perked up the moment we heard host Emily Hanford drop that line in the latest episode of the "Sold a Story" podcast. 🎧 In the half hour retrospective, she talked with researchers about how understanding the science of reading is only the start of the work: "... there are intense debates going on right now on social media and among teachers and researchers about the details of how to teach kids to read. And how to do it at scale. Because that’s the task here. Getting thousands of school districts to make the right kinds of changes so that millions of kids can become better readers. It’s a tall order." No one knows that order better than the leaders we work with each week to transform their systems. Join us Wednesday to hear their stories and reflections. 👇 bit.ly/lit-june12
