Nielsen announced it will phase out panel-only ratings as a standalone currency, shifting to a Big Data + Panel approach within its Nielsen ONE platform. This move, now accredited by the Media Rating Council for national measurement, integrates set-top box and smart TV data with traditional panels. Local ratings are still awaiting approval. This shift comes after Nielsen lost accreditation in 2021 due to undercounting audiences during the pandemic. While this move is widely seen as necessary modernization, it also highlights how measurement competition has intensified, with Comscore, Inc., Inscape, VideoAmp, and iSpot gaining ground as alternative currencies. Some buyers see this as a step in the right direction, but others believe it’s too little, too late—especially as major players like Paramount have already moved on to different measurement providers. Here’s what we think at Locality. This shift was inevitable. The industry has been moving toward Big Data-driven measurement for years, and panel-only ratings simply couldn’t keep up with today’s fragmented viewing habits. Advertisers need scale, accuracy, and granularity. Local markets are the backbone of many ad campaigns, and ensuring trustworthy local measurement remains a work in progress. Nielsen’s move reinforces what advertisers already know: there is no one-size-fits-all measurement solution anymore. More buyers are testing alternative providers and adopting multi-currency strategies to compare results and improve attribution. It’s critical for both local and national brands to easily leverage data-driven insights and reach local audiences - with precision - to boost ad engagement and ultimately consumer action.
