Young feminists responding to their community's crises bring a much-needed holistic approach ✨ INUA KIKE, a group led by young feminists in Kenya, shared their transformative approach to providing emergency relief to families affected by recent floods, government-mandated demolition of homes, and mass civil protests followed by deadly repression: "Recognizing the growing needs in our community, we allocated part of the grant to address the aftermath of the nationwide floods and the demolition of structures along the Nairobi River, following a government directive. So far, we've been able to reach 160 families in urban informal settlements like Mathare, Baba Dogo, and Korogocho, providing much-needed relief. Additionally, we've expanded our support for women and girls running small businesses during these harsh economic times. Through our ongoing interactions, we continue to identify those in critical need of psychosocial support. We have been implementing one-week psychological support sessions, with follow-up monitoring to ensure progress. These sessions have been vital in providing healing and emotional relief for those deeply affected. Moreover, we continue to enroll adolescents from these families in our Girls Rising Nairobi Project. A project that creates safe spaces to empower girls and ensures they receive the support necessary to thrive. Our work continues, and we remain committed to uplifting vulnerable communities across Nairobi and beyond." Afghan women and girls face government attempts to erase them, and a dramatic loss of all their human rights, yet their courage and resilience remain unshaken. As Ayat Hamza powerfully states, ‘The hardships Afghan women have endured would have broken anyone, but no matter how difficult the trials, Afghan women will rise taller, stronger, and more determined than ever.’ 🌸 Despite severe restrictions, Afghan girls and young feminists continue to lead and organize to respond to their communities' needs. We are committed to supporting them! While many traditional humanitarian funders have withdrawn support for efforts led by local women and girls to comply with the Taliban's oppressive rule, at the Global Resilience Fund, we remain steadfast in our support and resourcing of Afghan girls and young feminists' crisis response efforts. Our ownership of our political identity as AANHPI peoples is an intentional act of solidarity to build power across communities of color and the vast AANHPI diasporas, which encompasses Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities - including Palestinians. In the past year, more than 40,000 Palestinians have lost their lives and over 2.3 million Palestinians have been displaced. For decades, countless lives in the Middle East have been deeply impacted by discrimination, dispossession, and violence. With the October 7th attack, taking of hostages, and heartbreaking devastation in Gaza, the philanthropic sector has struggled with how to respond - especially when it comes to supporting Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim communities. Last week, Feminists in Kenya attended the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa and hosted a side session on “African Feminist Reflections on Gendered Misinformation/Disinformation in an Increasingly hostile world. From online, home, street and state.” We shared some insightful discussions on misinformation and disinformation and its effects on marginalised groups and explored ways to push back.
