Weaving Ecosystems

Last July 30th, we hosted the 8th Arampangan with the theme: "Collaboration for Social Good" – a theme that resonates deeply with our work at Binhi Mindful Market and Weaving Ecosystems. We were invited to share the story of Binhi sa Rurungan (BSR), showcasing our market-driven approach to collaboration. Together with my partner, Ria Lim of Rurungan Sa Tubod Foundation, we discussed the motivations behind our partnership, the community ecosystem model that emerged through working with our partner merchants, and the creation of Weaving Ecosystems — an initiative that aims to refine, scale, and replicate the BSR model, further amplifying our impact. Read more about this work at weavingecosystems.com. Arampangan has been a driving force in fostering community and cooperation among social impact leaders and local government in Palawan since 2022. Weaving Ecosystems is a project born from the seeds of collaboration sown in 2019. Binhi sa Rurungan, a partnership between Binhi Mindful Market and Rurungan Sa Tubod Foundation, gave rise to the innovative Community Ecosystem Model. ✨🌱 Through shared resources and experience, Binhi and Rurungan together offer a comprehensive approach to local community empowerment and growth. It hosts a community marketplace and hub in Puerto Princesa City at the Rurungan Compound while fostering a collaborative environment for shared learning, access, and growth among local enterprises and makers. Island communities in Southeast Asia face challenges when economic growth is prioritized over environmental and cultural well-being. Rapid development often prioritizes short-term gains, harming the environment, displacing locals, and threatening cultural heritage. When tourism dips, overreliance creates instability. 🏝️ So, how can communities truly thrive? We believe in fostering a thriving community ecosystem. 🍃 This empowers local businesses, farmers, artisans, and Indigenous communities through shared resources, skills training, market access, and education. How do we weave communities for a thriving local economy? 🌱 Through a community ecosystem model, we ourselves as local communities can foster holistic development. A community ecosystem is a model of interweaving local communities together through cooperative and collective actions that foster wellbeing, creative autonomy, and the local living economy. This ‘interweaving’ builds each other’s strengths, share resources and knowledge, and connects social and cultural practices and enterprises through collective learning. The Weaving Ecosystems Toolkit is now live! 🥳 This toolkit is a free downloadable resource for local communities, social enterprises, artisans and makers to interweave their practices and co-create a community ecosystem. Guided by the principle of Kapit Bisig (literally translating to being ‘arm in arm’), it seeks to build knowledge and skills toward collaboration among small enterprises, makers, and culture bearers. The toolkit shares insights and learnings from an inaugural batch of participants in this ‘community ecosystem’ model in Palawan.
