“With the latest deepfake technology there is now so much more footage than there used to be, and we’re worried it’s only going to increase.” An unfortunate but probable foreshadowing from Park Seonghye, a member of South Korea’s Advocacy Centre for Online Sexual Abuse Victims. This article is a harrowing and worthwhile read. It underscores just how crucial content moderation has become - especially detection of GenAI/deepfakes - not just for platforms’ safety, or that of their users, but also in the larger fight to safeguard (this is no longer a stretch to say) reality itself. Reporting by the BBC, along with investigations by South Korean authorities, revealed extensive online networks of (often adolescent) boys creating explicit content using women’s social media photos and deepfake tools. Worse yet, many of the victims are underage and the perpetrators brush off the severity of their offense, seeing the immense and illegal violation of privacy as “not real” and “a prank” (or at least claiming as much). In a twist that calls other recent headlines to mind, most of these deepfake groups live on Telegram, an app whose trust and safety vigilance is increasingly under fire.
