Resilience Healthcare helps our communities get ready for school! West Suburban Medical Center hosted the West Side Pastors’ Coalition for AIDS & Inner City Health Back to School Health & Resource Fair on August 10th, which provided free backpacks and school supplies thanks to generous contributions from our team members. Our booth at the event highlighted some of the services we provide and was anchored by Charmaine Webb, RN (Stroke Care); Noemi Voda, RN (Wound Care); and Dr. Julie Kafka (Sports Medicine). Weiss Memorial Hospital participated in the Back to School events at Brenneman School on August 21st. We were able to donate backpacks, pencils, markers, colored pencils, highlighters, erasers, pens, scissors, notebooks, glue, crayons, paper towels, folders, tissues, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant wipes. Resilience Healthcare is represented at a Warren Park school’s career day event! Melissa Maldonado (pictured on the left), a Phlebotomist at West Suburban Medical Center, and Rachel Rodriguez (pictured on the right), a Pathology Assistant at Weiss Memorial Hospital, had the privilege of speaking at a Warren Park school for a recent career day event. Melissa presented first, explaining how Phlebotomists are specially trained to collect blood samples from patients by venipuncture. She described the importance of having steady hands, a calm demeanor, and sharp attention to detail in her job. The students were fascinated and asked thoughtful questions about everything from how many tubes are drawn per patient to what happens after the samples get to the lab. Next, Rachel discussed her role as a Pathology Assistant. She explained how she assists Pathologists by preparing surgical specimens and capturing images. The students were grossed-out yet intrigued as she showed examples of fake organs and described how she meticulously examines tissue samples under the microscope to diagnose disease. She made sure to emphasize the great responsibility that comes with this job and the years of education required. By the end, the students had much more insight into professions in healthcare. At Weiss, we want to continue to display dedication to our community members and provide increased awareness of the risks associated with untreated high blood pressure and diabetes. Resilience Healthcare joined in recognizing the field of Speech Language Pathology in May! Earlier this year, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) announced that “Better Speech and Hearing Month” will now be known as “National Speech-Language-Hearing Month!” Each May, we recognize the work done by our Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists, partnering closely with our ENT specialists, to help people improve their communication skills. The Weiss outpatient therapy clinic now offers male-specific pelvic floor assessment and treatment for our community! Physical Therapist Nathan Brimm, PT, DPT, provides this client-centered service using a variety of clinical techniques and tools, with a strong focus on education and self-management goals. Nathan states, “I am excited to treat the male population who come to our clinic with pelvic floor dysfunction. Being a male practitioner in this rehab space gives me the unique opportunity to provide a level of added comfort treating diagnoses that can be sensitive in nature. Various male pelvic floor conditions are treated in our outpatient clinic. Weiss was excited to welcome Dr. Prashant Adhikari from Nepal. Dr. Adhikari was a guest of Dr. Eldin Karaikovic, our Orthopedic Surgeon, who was teaching Dr. Adhikari how to perform a kyphoplasty on a dummy. A kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures by inflating a balloon to restore bone height, then injecting bone cement in the vertebral body. It was a wonderful experience for both Drs.
