We wanted to see what would happen if you ran spray arc MIG with an extreme drag and push angle and were surprised by what we found. Here Austin is welding 3/8th's plate using the ABICOR BINZEL ABIMIG AT 225 to show how when you have too extreme of a drag, you will get a lot of spatter and leave you with a smokey work piece. While running with an extreme push angle left us with a decent bead. Watch the full video testing the penetration of push vs pull over on YouTube https://foxly.link/gVnNYS

If you are setting up to practice or setting up for a job, it is a good practice to set yourself up for success by removing the mill scale around your weld joint like Austin has on this practice around different shapes using the Walter Surface Technologies Mini PS in combination with their Enduro-Flex Flap Disc. Another thing you can do to set yourself up is find a MIG gun that is lightweight and comfortable in your hand like this ABIMIG AT 355 LW from ABICOR BINZEL that offers different neck options to reach hard places. Distortion is always going to happen when welding and is fought with clamps and fixtures to hold things in place. If you want to see just how much it moves without them, Austin TIG welds stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum to show just how much they pull by attaching a laser pointer to track the movements on a whiteboard after each pass. If you need to make a tie-in on your 2G root pass when MIG welding, make sure you feather your stop so you can start in front of your tie-in giving the weld time to heat up while having a thin layer of metal to break through on the edge like Austin has with this Walter Surface Technologies Mini PS grinder using a 1/4 grinding disc.
