𝙍𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝙈𝙉 𝙋𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙨 – 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟳- 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟵 Westbrook designed a series of pedestrian bridges for the City of Rochester, MN. The bridges are part of the Douglas Trail on the City’s northwest side. The first bridge consists of 23 spans with a total length of over 1700 feet. It crosses over 7th Street, US Hwy 14, and Cascade Creek. Westbrook began design in 2007 and the bridge was constructed in 2009. The second bridge, over Valleyhigh Drive, consists of 19 spans with a total length of 940 feet. It was designed in 2011 and constructed in 2012. Both bridges have a 12-foot clear width and consist of a combination of prefabricated steel trusses and cast-in-place concrete slabs. In addition to pedestrian loading, they can accommodate a two-axle maintenance vehicle.

The project, located in Albia, IA, involved the removal of the existing structurally deficient thru plate girder bridge (TPG) and construction of a new railroad Cooper E80 designed TPG. Westbrook performed permitting, feasibility cost study, Class I railroad coordination and track outages, final bridge design and construction management for the new structure. The new TPG bridge structure consisted of a 43’-7 ¾” single span, open ballasted timber tie deck supported on the existing bridge abutments.

Westbrook designed the patterned removal of the deck, stringers, floor beams, and determined strategic cutting and piecewise removal of portions of the stiffening truss. Advanced analysis was required to prevent overstresses from occurring due to differential deflections of up to five feet from elastic shortening of the suspension cables. Westbrook also determined pre-cut sizes and locations to prepare the steel truss, towers, and cables for final explosive demolition. To see the demolition, here’s a video from the Ohio Department of Transportation: https://lnkd.in/gD4qqsuC

The existing marina wall was comprised of rock-filled wire gabion baskets that had severely deteriorated jeopardizing the safety of the wall and the main drinking water supply for Denver, CO. Westbrook was retained by JJR, LLC of Madison, WI as the structural expert for the re-design of the marina wall. The new bulkhead wall was made to consist of vertical steel HP-soldier piles with welded sheeting interlocks. In addition, Westbrook also designed specialty crane bases adjacent to the bulkhead wall to assist in the placement and removal of pleasure crafts.

This video (sped up - we work fast but not this fast😁), shows a brief glimpse of the precision and expertise involved in setting pre-cast foundation pieces using a TCC1100 crane for the NICTD South Shore Line West Lake Corridor project. This platform will serve as a critical access point for passengers boarding the trains. Given the stringent ADA compliance requirements, our team collaborates closely with VS Engineering, Inc. surveyors to ensure exact placement. Safety is paramount, especially working alongside active rail lines. #TeamMetropolitanSteel worked with Westbrook Associated Engineers, Inc. to develop a plan that ensured every lift capacity exceeds safety standards by at least 150%. Join us to see how meticulous engineering meets rigorous safety in structural steel erection. It's been an absolute pleasure working with our project partners: VS Engineering, Inc.
