Westchester County Executive George Latimer Statement on Yom Kippur "As Yom Kippur begins, Jewish families across Westchester County and around the world will come together to mark a day of atonement, reflection and prayer. This sacred and solemn holiday is a time to step back from our everyday routine, look inward, and seek forgiveness for the drawbacks in our own lives. To all who observe Yom Kippur, may your prayers bring you peace, and your reflections lead to growth and understanding. I send my warmest wishes to our Jewish community and hope for a meaningful day and an easy fast. G’mar Chatimah Tovah."

Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Wishnie, and Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler are proud to honor Joseph Abreau and Paul Mullin of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps (OVAC) for their heroic actions during a life-threatening emergency. Their quick thinking and decisive response saved a woman's life and prevented a potentially catastrophic house fire. In mid-September, Abreau and Mullin were dispatched to a residence in the Town of Ossining for a report of a woman who had fainted. Upon arrival, they were met with dark smoke pouring from the house and a victim lying on the floor. Mullin quickly attended to the victim while Abreau communicated with dispatch for additional support from the Ossining Fire Department. Abreau extinguished an active fire on the stove by smothering it with a blanket from the stretcher, thereby averting what could have been a devastating blaze. The patient was subsequently treated at Phelps Hospital in the hyperbaric chamber to prevent long-term impacts from carbon monoxide poisoning. Latimer said: “Thanks to their swift actions, the victim received the necessary medical attention, and the fire was extinguished before it could spread. Joseph and Paul exemplify the spirit of service that our emergency responders embody, and we are grateful for their dedication to our community.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/eyK3DvV2

Amler has served as Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Health since 2011. Westchester County Executive George Latimer Statement on Rosh Hashanah "Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year, a time for celebration, reflection and renewal. As residents all across Westchester gather with family and friends to observe this important holiday, we are reminded of the values that guide this season. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the ten-day period that offers a time for prayer, to perform good deeds, to reflect on past mistakes, and an opportunity to seek ways to improve ourselves and make amends with others. May we carry forward the spirit of renewal, working together to ensure that Westchester continues to be a place where all cultures and traditions are celebrated and everyone can thrive. Let this New Year be filled with sweetness, joy and peace to everyone observing. L'Shanah Tovah."
