Westchester County Executive George Latimer introduced legislation to the Westchester County Board of Legislators to recognize Andrew J. Spano, Westchester’s seventh County Executive, by naming the Westchester County Archives and Records Center in his honor. The building is proposed to be named the Andrew J. Spano County Archives and Records Center. The dedication is part of Latimer’s ongoing effort to pay homage and respect to his predecessors in Westchester County Government. Spano served three terms as County Executive from 1998 through 2009. During his administration, he oversaw the implementation of many programs that improved the quality of life for Westchester’s residents, including protecting the environment, encouraging affordable housing, combating domestic violence and enhancing public safety. Spano is credited with tripling the County’s New Homes Land Acquisition Fund, which helped builders of affordable housing overcome the high cost of land. Spano also created the County’s Domestic Violence Legal Program, a nationally-recognized center where women could obtain orders of protection, legal representation and child support. Spano served as County Clerk from 1982 through 1994, and it was during that time he is credited with expanding the County’s record management program to include an archive, and digitizing the County’s most critical records. Once County Executive, Spano continued this work, helping to shepherd the creation of the County’s Virtual Archives, and the renovation of the Archives and Records Center. As part of Westchester County’s ongoing effort to develop a Co-Occurring System of Care (COSOC), the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH) presented its annual Fall Forum at the Westchester County Center. This year’s theme was Pathways Forward: Westchester County Co-Occurring System of Care: Innovating Prevention, Treatment, Recovery and System Transformation. The Forum was an opportunity to bring together over 430 service providers, agency CEOs, hospitals, schools, CBOs, State & Local Elected Officials, and leaders from Mid-Hudson Counties to learn about Westchester County’s leadership in the realm of co-occurring systems of care – a model that is being replicated across the United States. Commissioner of the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) Dr. Chinzano Cunningham and Executive Deputy Commissioner of the NYS Office of Mental Health Moira Tashjian addressed the crowd. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “I want to thank our Department of Community Mental Health, under the leadership of Commissioner Michael Orth, for bringing us together today to share ideas to make our system of care even more inclusive. It is impressive to see over 400 people gather to learn from each other, discuss what is working and what needs improvement, so that change can happen at all levels of government.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d8dANZcr

In a proactive effort to combat reckless driving behavior around school buses, Westchester County has partnered with BusPatrol to launch a new school bus stop-arm photo enforcement program to reduce the number of illegal passings of motorists and protect students. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “New York State law is clear—motorists must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is deployed. This is a crucial measure to ensure the safety of our children. The technology, installation, and maintenance of these safety systems come at no cost to school districts or taxpayers, making it an essential and cost-effective way to protect our students.” The program is focused on student safety equity. Every bus in participating district fleets will be equipped with bus stop-arm cameras which utilize artificial intelligence to detect cars that illegally pass stopped school buses. The following Westchester County School Districts are participating in the program: • Lakeland Central School District • Mamaroneck Schools • Ossining Union Free School District • Eastchester Union Free School District • Tarrytown Union Free School District • Blind Brook-Rye Union Free School District • Katonah-Lewisboro School District • Greenburgh Central School District • Hendrick Hudson Central School District • Croton Harmon Schools • Harrison Central School District Read more here: https://ow.ly/81MS50TReVZ
