Safe, stable housing is integral to health. #mdhhssdohinfluencer
Did you know that many families in Michigan struggle to afford a place to live? Affordable housing means paying no more than 30% of your income on housing costs. But in Michigan, a lot of families, about 12.1%, have to spend more than half of their income just on housing. Between 2013 and 2021, the average price of homes in Michigan shot up by 84%. This big jump makes it even harder for people and families to find housing they can afford in the state. Let's examine the disparities further. Even though Black people are only 14% of Michigan's population, they make up 48% of the homeless individuals. These numbers show how important it is to tackle the bigger problems that lead to unstable housing and homelessness, especially among marginalized communities. Check out the map below to see how severe housing cost burden varies across different counties in Michigan. It's evident that disparities exist, showing why it's important that housing stability remains a top priority in Phase III of the Social Determinants of Health Strategy. Together, let's advocate for policies that promote fair housing practices and work towards building communities where everyone has a safe and stable place to call home.
