"On Your Side" is more than a slogan, it's a mission really. Part of that mission is advocating for our community, and we do it well! We were proud to support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this past weekend, an event that is extremely important to so many in our community! Nice job Claudine Ewing! #community #OnYourSide #TEGNA

We’re celebrating Scott Semson! After 40+ years at WGRZ, Scott has decided to retire… so we threw a little party for him! It’s not often that one person is beloved and liked by everyone, but it is true in Scott’s case! The following is an email that Scott’s boss, Boomer Connell sent out to the entire staff. With Boomer’s permission, we’re sharing it with all of you… Scott joins just a few employees in the station’s history who have worked here for over four decades. Scott’s dedication to WGRZ has certainly stood out in his many roles with the company. Scott started here as an Operations Engineer working the overnight shift on our live all night movies show – Barry’s Cat’s Pajamas. Scott did everything from Master Control, Audio, Tape and Telecine (if anyone still knows what that was.) He also made several appearances on-air as part of the Cat’s Pajamas Crew and many of the bits Barry inserted in between the movie segments. Scott continued in Operations for the next few years, adding Live Truck operations to his skill set. When we acquired our first Satellite Truck, Scott volunteered to become one of our primary operators. He kept his “go bag” with him 24/7 and was ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice for a live shot anywhere in the US and Canada. He spent many a night sleeping in the back of the truck while on the road covering breaking and out of town news. Scott was promoted to manager and did a spectacular job. He has worked countless long days and taken many calls in the middle of the night while being on call 24/7 for all these years. Scott’s initiative was well demonstrated as he was self-taught in many engineering maintenance and IT skills. He played very important roles as we transitioned from analog to digital to HD and beyond. He has relocated Master Control 3 times and changed out the Production Control Room 4 times. There have been numerous studio and set installations, in addition to newsroom renovations. Scott has installed most of our equipment and ran miles of cable throughout the building. Scott knows our buildings like they are his own house. He can walk in and know within seconds that there is a problem with the HVAC system and quickly know how to fix it. This past year he was named Teammate of the year for his exceptional work and specifically for the installation of our new transmitter. Scott helped design the layout and installation of the new system which keeps us on the air. Most importantly, Scott is a wonderful person to work with, extremely helpful to all staff and willing to do whatever it took to help get the job done. We thank him for all his hard work and dedication. We will certainly miss not seeing him constantly around the building. #TEGNA #Culture #OnYourSide #Teammate #Friend
