Two weeks ago, we had an extraordinary experience at the 12th Wharton Latin American Conference (WHALAC) 🌟 🚀, bringing together visionaries, industry experts, and change-makers dedicated to shaping the future of Latin America. It was a privilege to host esteemed keynote speakers like Duane Hughes, Chair of the Advisory Council at UBS, Luis Almagro, Secretary General at Organización de los Estados Americanos, Paulo Passoni, Managing Partner at Valor Capital Group, and Caroline Merin, former COO of Rappi, who was interviewed by Patrick McGinnis, VC investor, for his podcast FOMO Sapiens. 🌐 Throughout the conference, we delved into pivotal topics including Investment and Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Sustainability and Inclusion, focusing on Latin America. We were pleased to participate in the Wharton Latin American Conference, where our CEO, Mauricio Cordero, joined the panel on "Bridging the Divide: Harnessing Tech for Poverty Alleviation in Latam,” alongside Leandro S. Pongeluppe (The Wharton School), Ady Beitler (Nilus), and Daniel Block (Mercy Corps Ventures). We had a great discussion filled with learnings and debate. A few important facts that most people are not aware of: - A family living without a fridge and freezer spends approximately 43% more on food expenses per week. (Turn2Us, 2020) - Households without a washing machine spend an average of 3.4 hours weekly on this labor, while households with a washing machine only spend an average of 2.7 hours per week. (ENUT, 2019) - Research by the Joe Shapiro Energy Institute finds that households owning basic items like an A/C can see an 80% decrease in heat-related mortality. Today, most Mexicans generally do not have access to credit for these types of durable goods. At Bankaya, our Impact Strategy, led by Ana Gastélum Dourritzague, aims to provide financing to these underserved segments. This enables our customers to acquire durable goods that can significantly improve their daily lives and level the playfield for opportunities they can access. Last Friday, I participated in a panel at the Wharton Latin American Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. We have announced a 1B investment in the Latam ecosystem and remain committed to supporting the entrepreneur community. Hearing from Goldie Shturman, MBA (U.S. International Development Finance Corporation), and Eduardo Moore (Grupo Arcor) about the socioeconomic, political, and skill traits that make Latin America a great partner was very insightful.  I tried to represent the potential in technology, not as a race to the bottom but as an innovation and high-value/education catalyst.
