The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks to be the defining museum of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American art.

About us

The Whitney seeks to be the defining museum of 20th- and 21st-century American art. The Museum collects, exhibits, preserves, researches, and interprets art of the United States in the broadest global, historical and interdisciplinary contexts. As the preeminent advocate for American art, we foster the work of living artists at critical moments in their careers. The Whitney educates a diverse public through direct interaction with artists, often before their work has achieved general acceptance. • Archibald John Motley, Jr.'s Gettin' Religion (1948) from the collection is now on view in Edges of Ailey 🎺🎶 For Alvin Ailey, dance and music were art forms of and for the people, originating and enduring in homes, the streets, and other everyday spaces. Rather than see dance as merely a response to music, he saw that both allowed an artist to express the spectrum of their feelings and experiences—a pillar of Ailey’s creative philosophy. Experience this work among others by Lyle Ashton Harris, Sam Gilliam, and Jean-Michel Basquiat in the Black Music section of the exhibition.

  • Today's the day! Edges of Ailey is officially open to the public. One of our most ambitious and unique exhibitions to date, Edges of Ailey is the first large-scale museum exhibition to celebrate the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey. Edges of Ailey consists of an immersive exhibition in the Whitney's fifth-floor galleries—featuring works by more than 80 artists—as well as a suite of performances in the Museum's third-floor theater, including AILEY in residence for one week each month during the exhibition. • Incoming! Jean-Michel Basquiat's Hollywood Africans (1983) from the Whitney's collection has recently been installed as part of Edges of Ailey. Hollywood Africans is one of a series of Basquiat's paintings that feature images and texts relating to stereotypes of African Americans in the entertainment industry. It was painted while the artist was on an extended visit to Los Angeles in 1983. The painting is featured in the Black Music section of Edges of Ailey, which opens to the public tomorrow. • The final countdown is on! ⏰ We're just one week away from the opening of Edges of Ailey, a major exhibition celebrating the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey. The New York Times calls Edges of Ailey "a one-of-a-kind exhibition that looks at Ailey in all his dimensions, personal and artistic, as well as the culture that he shaped." Member Previews begin tomorrow with the public opening on September 25!
