September is National Cholesterol Education Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of managing cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is a significant risk factor for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States which disproportionately impacts non-white and low-income communities. High cholesterol has no symptoms and a blood test from your primary care provider is needed to monitor and maintain healthy levels. By educating ourselves and others, we can take proactive steps towards better heart health. 1 in 5 children in the United States are obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk of serious and chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Maintaining a healthy weight during childhood through nutritious food and regular exercise can improve health outcomes for the rest of a person’s life. Let’s keep our kids healthy by raising awareness about childhood obesity! GBH Boston featured Whittier Street Health Center’s groundbreaking initiative which aims to close gaps in diagnosing developmental disabilities for kids of color. Pediatric and neurodevelopmental specialist, Dr. Oanea, recently joined Whittier’s team in an effort to close the gap between initial screenings and diagnostic evaluations which improves health outcomes for the child. This is a vital new program for our patients as a lack of access to these essential services disproportionally impacts low-income and minority communities. September is National Recovery Month! At Whittier, we are committed to providing resources and support to anyone struggling with addiction or substance misuse, irrespective of race, ethnicity, or means. Food insecurity increases vulnerability to disease, malnutrition, and poverty. A lack of access to affordable nutritious food is linked to an elevated risk of chronic health conditions and poor health outcomes. At Whittier, we tackle the underlying causes of poor health by ensuring equitable access to nutritious food and wellness services. Our Food Pantry and Fair Foods programs, alongside our Registered Dietitians, are dedicated to making nutrition accessible for our community in the surrounding food desert service area.
