💬 “The WHO’s workshop held in Heraklion is an extremely positive initiative. The fact that workshops are being held in all 7 health regions indicates that there is targeted action by the Office (in Athens), moving away from fragmented and occasional activities of the past. It signifies commitment from both the Ministry of Health of Greece and WHO to move forward with changes aimed at enhancing quality and effectiveness of healthcare services for patients”, highlighted Stelios Kteniadakis, Deputy Director of the General Hospital of Heraklion, ‘PAGNI’. 👉🏻 Find our more here: https://lnkd.in/dyReGBSV The programme is funded by the European Commission through DG REFORM. #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice #StrategyQoCandPS WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA Christos Triantafyllou Válter R Fonseca Marie Stridborg Constantina Vasileiou

About us
The new WHO Country Office in Greece was established in 2018 and is located in Athens, providing a platform for daily collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Health and other stakeholders on national health priorities. The Country Office assists the Greek Government in shaping the national health agenda, providing technical support and monitoring and assessing health trends. Operating with a holistic health-system approach, the Country Office is dedicated to assisting Greece in achieving universal health coverage and fostering a sustainable, efficient health system. The priorities for the Country Office are set out in a biennial work plan between WHO/Europe and the host country, implemented in close collaboration with national institutions and international partner agencies. In April 2021, the WHO European Centre of Excellence for Quality in Care and Patient Safety was established in Athens, Greece, under the umbrella of the Country Office. Inspired by the European Programme of Work (EPW) 2020–2025 – ‘United Action for Better Health in Europe’, the Centre is dedicated to significantly enhancing quality of care and patient safety. This sub-regional office will support the implementation of a shared ambition to achieve the highest level of well-being, health and health protection in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Its main aim is to support the efforts of Member States to build safe, qualitative, effective and resilient health systems at the core of post COVID-19 strategies.

📈 Improving child and adolescent health and well-being in Europe I invite you to read an insightful article on this crucial topic, featured in Nature Magazine by my colleagues - Sophie Jullien, Martin W. Weber, Susanne Carai, João Breda and Natasha Azzopardi Muscat. The latest trends in this area are deeply concerning: 🔹 Obesity rates are rising 🔹 Adolescent mental health is deteriorating 🔹 The digital environment presents new risks 🔹 Breastfeeding rates remain low 🔹 Many children face developmental challenges 🔹 Displaced children struggle with significant health issues As the authors rightly conclude, we need a comprehensive strategy to address these challenges – one that leads to increased investment, stronger protection from commercial harm, effective governance, and accountability to improve health outcomes and this is what we are taking forward as WHO Regional Office for Europe. 📖 Read the full article and join the conversation on how we can better support our future generations: https://bit.ly/4gg8aOR #HealthForAll

💬 “There must be an action plan, a national plan, as this is essential to ensure quality. Without such a plan, quality cannot be guaranteed, and it cannot be the responsibility of individual organizations alone. Centralized planning is not just necessary; it is imperative”, highlighted Eleni Filipoppoulou, Deputy Manager of the General Hospital of Aetolia-Akarnania Nursing Unit in Messolonghi. 👉🏻 Find our more here: https://lnkd.in/dyReGBSV The programme is funded by the European Commission through DG REFORM. #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice #StrategyQoCandPS WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA Válter R Fonseca Christos Triantafyllou Constantina Vasileiou Marie Stridborg

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” These timeless words of Pericles captured the spirit of Athens Digital Health Week 2025, where the WHO Office on Quality of Care and Patient Safety in Athens actively participated and explored the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the European Health Data Space (EHDS) era, with a focus on quality of care and patient safety. 💡 The discussions highlighted how AI can improve healthcare systems by enhancing precision, accessibility, and equity—while always safeguarding patient safety, transparency, and ethical integrity. 🏥 AI is more than just a technological leap; it reflects the values that guide its development. From mental health innovations to programs like HEALTH-IQ, our WHO Athens Office on Quality of Care and Patient Safety is committed to advancing AI tools that empower healthcare professionals and build trust with patients. A heartfelt thank you to the organizers of Athens Digital Health Week for creating such a dynamic platform for dialogue and collaboration. It was a privilege to join distinguished speakers, including Alternate Minister of Health, Dr Eirini Agapidaki.🙏 Through our collective efforts, we can harness innovation to advance health and create a fairer, healthier future for all. 💙 #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA IDIKA SA - e-Government Center for Social Security Services

💬 “We had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with several fellow colleagues and other participants. We had the chance to learn many things, and I believe our inputs have played a significant role in developing the national strategy, which was the primary purpose of this workshop”, stated Mr Lambros Theodosopoulos, Head of the Department of Health and Safety at the Public Health Directorate of the 2nd Health Region of Greece. 👉🏻 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dyReGBSV The programme is funded by the European Commission through DG REFORM. #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice #StrategyQoCandPS WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA Válter R Fonseca Christos Triantafyllou Constantina Vasileiou Marie Stridborg

💬 “We realized that in Greece, too, we are gradually starting to talk about quality indicators. In other words, quality is starting to be quantified and measured, and this is very important”, noted Giorgos Karavanas, Deputy Head of the General Hospital of Lamia. 👉🏻 Find our more here: https://lnkd.in/dyReGBSV The programme is funded by the European Commission through DG REFORM. #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice #StrategyQoCandPS WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA Válter R Fonseca Christos Triantafyllou Marie Stridborg Constantina Vasileiou

💬 “The workshop is an excellent initiative. Since we are starting to develop a national plan, the best thing we can do is find out what the people who are going to implement all of this really need. Understanding their needs, their worries, listening to them and understanding the current situation in the Greek society, and developing a plan based on the needs of the Greek society, using of course additional data from all over the world, will build a Strategy that will have an increased chance of success”, said Dr Zoi Tsimtsiou, Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine and Quality in Healthcare at the School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. 👉🏻 Find our more here: https://lnkd.in/dyReGBSV The programme is funded by the European Commission through DG REFORM. #WHOGreece #AthensQoCOffice #StrategyQoCandPS WHO Regional Office for Europe JOAO BREDA Válter R Fonseca Constantina Vasileiou Christos Triantafyllou Marie Stridborg

💬 “The main message of the workshop is that the methodology used for the creation of this strategy is a really good guide. It facilitates communication among participants, promotes democratic dialogue, and is based on evidence-based information, not just beliefs”, emphasized Dr Christos Lionis, Professor Emeritus of General Practice and Primary Health Care, in the School of Medicine of the University of Crete.
