I Teach Because… Teaching Is Very Meaningful Jocelyne Centeno teaches in a diverse district because it’s important for students to see teachers who look like them, speak their language, and have similar backgrounds and experiences. In Wichita Public Schools, the world walks in our hallways, with more than 100 languages spoken in students’ homes and 97 countries of origin. The student body is 37.5% Hispanic, 29% Caucasian, 19.7% African American, 8.1% Multi-Racial, 4.7% Asian, and 1% Native American and Pacific Islander. We believe our students thrive when they see more educators who look like them and inspire them to achieve success. I Teach Because… I Want to Be a Role Model Special Education teacher Chris Brown found his way to education when he volunteered in the classroom while playing football for the Wichita Force. He believes teaching special education provides an opportunity to be their advocate and their voice when they don’t always have those skills on their own. Teachers are needed to build strong leaders for the next generation, says high school teacher Isaiah Gates. After initially pursuing a major in finance, he realized that being a teacher was a vehicle for his calling to show students who look like him that they can be successful, they can be leaders and they can be good people. In Wichita Public Schools, the world walks in our hallways, with more than 100 languages spoken in students’ homes and 97 countries of origin. I Teach Because… I Had Phenomenal Teachers Middle school music teacher Panya Amphone was inspired to go into education because he had teachers who believed in him. Now he is the teacher he needed to see when he was in middle school – a male teacher of color who can be there for his students.
