Practice self care with us today. Today I feel __________________________ in my body. This feeling is acting as an alarm/nudge/reminder to ____________________. Here are three ways I can support myself, instead of avoiding/ignoring this feeling: 1. 2. 3. We often thing of leaning into opposities or joining our body when doing this exercise with clients. Here are a few examples. I feel a frenetic energy, restless, agitated, can't keep still. This may be your body responding to a flight stimuli. You may try JOINING your body and go for a brisk walk or run, shaking out your sillies, or having a dance party. I feel overwhelmed by my environment, panicy, and my chest feels tight. This may be your body sensing a desire to increase your feelings of safety. You may try heading your body's alarm and moving to a safe space and/or using objects and stimuli to support your sense of comfort. Once you're in a space you feel comfortable, focus on grounding yourself, one technique is to count all the blue objects or a repetive object/pattern or to find objects that are the color of the rainbow (ROYGBIV). Other opposities: Hot - drink cold water Overstimulated - go out in nature and put your devices away Angry - try rage coloring (yep, pick a color and just go - no staying in the lines for you) My mind is racing - get it out of your head and stream of conciousness journal Lonely - connect Worried - focus on what you know to be true Sad - watch a funny cat video . . . . . #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy

Election cycles bring a whirlwind of emotions, conversations, and headlines. While democracy thrives on engagement, these seasons often bring unique challenges, particularly for women and female-identifying individuals in Ohio. With topics like reproductive health, family rights, economic stability, and healthcare at the forefront, it’s natural to feel both hopeful and burdened by the weight of these issues. It is important for our own emotional well-being, and our capacity to keep doing the things that we care about, that we recognize how challenging these times can be. During these cycles, it’s essential to safeguard your mental health while staying engaged with the issues you care about. By setting boundaries, staying mindful of your needs, and discovering ways to take action that align with your capacity and values, you can make it through the season with a balanced sense of agency and calm. While anxious and intrusive thoughts are often experienced by new parents, for many these feelings and thoughts do not interrupt daily living or care for the infant. However, for some the obsessions, anxious and intrusive thougths, and compulsions to act may impact their life, be excessively upseting, or everpresent. The parents in the later group, may be experiencing Perinatal/Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (POCD). POCD effects up to 5-17% of pregnant and postpartum birthing people according to the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health. POCD is categorized as a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder and includes anxious and intrusive thoughts, and compulsions that are difficult to move past without first giving into the act. Oftentimes obsessions and intrusive thoughts revolve around the six subtypes: contamination, checking, counting, sexual, ordering or religion. While the common compulsions may look like: excessive washing and cleaning, repeated checking of baby, excessive reassurance-seeking, avoidance of certain objects near baby (ie. knives), or mental compulsions like saying a prayer a specific number of times to keep the baby safe. POCD can be incredibly stressful and overwhelming, however, it's also very treatable. If you've had intrusive thoughts or compulsions you've been worried to share with someone, please reach out to a mental health provider, @POEM, or other knowledgable support professional (nurse, OB, psychiatrist, midwife, PCP, etc.). You may also email us at hello@wildhopetherapy to learn how we can support you as a new parent with therapy. If you're experiencing thoughts of suicide, self harm, or urges that feel unsafe towards another, please contact 811, 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. . . . . . #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy

It's okay to turn off the tv. It's okay to step away from social media. It's okay to end a conversation. It's okay to lean in to safe spaces and people. It's okay to need a break from the election... It's also okay to share your passion. It's also okay to voice your concern. It's also okay to wear your gear. It's also okay to advocate proudly and respectfully. It's okay to be fired up... Whatever you need at this time - voting is the most effective way to use your voice. . . . . . #advocacyissocialwork #socialwork #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy

A favorite spooky season post because we know you've heard "fake it till you make it." In a lot of contexts (maybe like being a witch or zombie) this expression is over used and maybe even in some professional contexts (e.g. one cannot fake flying a plane) inappropriate or unsafe. However, in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) the idea of "opposite action" can be a helpful tool. The idea is that you lean into the negative emotion or behavior and "fake it" to illicit change. For example, a person experiencing depression may "fake" the behavior of enjoyment about something they would like if they were feeling well. This helps them to activate behavior change as a catalyst to change their thoughts and feelings as well. A person with anxiety about a specific trigger can also use this technique to expose themselves (safely and gradually) to the irrational anxiety or phobia. By "faking" bravery they will also increase their distress tolerance for the trigger. So whoever you (or your little goblins and ghouls) are channeling this Halloween, reflect on how "faking it" could help you make it as you support yourself and your mental health. . . . . . #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy

"The story I'm telling myself..." We all tell ourselves stories. We pick up pieces, lean into core beliefs, guess about the circumstances: they're called Cognitive Distortions or intrusive and irrational thoughts. They inform the world around us and impact our thougths, feelings, and behaviors. When frequent or extreme, however, they can also be harmful. Check in with yourself, exploring your own irrational thoughts and look for common patterns. Exploring these patterns can help you push back on automatic negative thoughts and work to focus on what it's true and useful. . . . . . #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy

“We Can Do Hard Things” is a beautiful mantra for life and a favorite podcast for many of us and our clients. The recent epiosde in which hosts, Glennon Doyle, her wife Abby Wambach, and her sister Amanda Doyle, speak with Ina Garten about living a joyful life (episode 350), caught our attention. We spend a lot of time in therapy searching. Searching for understanding, permission, validation, support, etc. As Ina shares her story of searching for joy, she remarks on the barriers along the way, namely her parents, social pressures, and supports. What she does not lack, however, is gumption and bravery. “It’s what I always call jump in the pond, splash around, see what’s good. If you don’t like it, get out of the pond. But at least you’ve tried it. Then once you’re in the pond, you can go, ‘Oh, that’s really interesting over there. I think I’m going to try over there.’ You move in that direction. Eventually you end up in a stream, which as a friend of mine says, the stream carries you along and you’re not knocking against the riverbanks. You’re in a stream that’s really where you belong.” In Ina’s life’s journey towards authenticity she learned how to create space for herself, let go of feelings of resentment, and refuse to let anyone tell her who to be. Her interview is light hearted and funny, features a run in with Taylor Swift, and is inspirational for those of searching for our own voice and the thing that brings us joy. . . . . . #therapist #therapy #feminist #intersectionalfeminist #feministtherapy #columbustherapist #columbustherapy #trauma #traumatherapy #traumainformed #traumatherapist #mentalhealth #millenialtherapy #feministtraumatherapist #millenialtherapist #perinatalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #instagramtherapy #instagramtherapist #centralohiotherapist #614therapy #614therapist #ohiotherapist #clevelandtherapist #cletherapist #clevelandtherapy #cletherapy
