Some thoughts for your Friday: 💰 The GBF calls for the mobilization of at least $200 billion per year in domestic and international biodiversity-related funding from all sources – public and private by 2030. 🌳 There are 750 million hectares of high integrity tropical forests which provide global, regional, and local ecosystems services that we all benefit from. ⭐ Modestly (very modestly), the value of high integrity tropical forest areas is US$30/ha annually (this really only takes into account the social cost of carbon). 🦋 For US$22.5 billion dollars a year (or 11% of the GBF goal) we could protect ALL of the high integrity tropical forests and the ecosystem services they provide (climate regulation, climate cooling rainfall, biodiversity maintenance, pollination, etc.) across the globe as well as supporting the stewards of those forests. 🍬 The global gum industry is valued at US$38.6 billion and growing. 💡 Global gum industry US$38.6 billion vs. US$22.5 billion dollars for all high integrity tropical forests. ❓ What do you think? #naturalcapital #biodiversity #sustainableinvesting #finance #sustainablefinance #nature #climateaction

  • 🌍 Rangers from around the world are gathering at the 10th IRF World Ranger Congress in France to highlight their vital role in protecting and restoring nature for people and the planet.    Rangers protect ecosystems, manage resources and enforce wildlife laws. They engage communities, educate visitors, and manage human-wildlife conflicts. They are Indigenous Peoples, volunteers, government staff, and nonprofit members—working tirelessly to protect and restore our planet.   As key players in global conservation, including the 30x30 goal to protect 30% of land and seas by 2030, what do they need to be more effective?   Stay tuned to learn more about their crucial work.    #WorldRangerCongress #ConservationHeroes #30x30

  • NEWS: #ArtificialIntelligence helped a WCS-led scientific team confirm the location of previously-unmapped high marine #biodiversity areas along Mozambique’s extensive coastline. This technology enabled WCS, conservation partners, and the government to accelerate progress by highlighting #coral reef hotspots for further investigation. "These areas have the potential to become Key Biodiversity Areas or future protected areas, prioritized for protection and improved management," said WCS's Hugo Costa. It was a great evening at the Central Park Zoo yesterday, as our team, with partners Ronald McDonald House New York and New York City Public Schools, hosted our 2nd Dream Night. It's an inclusive and educational cost-free evening for children with special healthcare needs and disabilities. The guests had the zoo to themselves along with keeper chats, animals encounters, and more. #education

We officially completed our 2024 aerial survey in the Greater Ruaha Katavi Landscape in #Tanzania. For four weeks, the WCS Tanzania team and our partners flew across the vast landscape using three aircrafts, collecting and documenting data and information on wildlife numbers and the animals' distribution in this landscape. We have been carrying out aerial surveys every three years here. This is the third of those aerial surveys. It's important for us to see the status of animals in the area, for more targeted #conservation approaches, as a measure of the impact of our work, and for informing decision makers. We look forward to sharing the findings of this survey once they're released by our partner the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute.

  • "An undercurrent of joy." Sir David Attenborough responds to his visit to Cambridge where he discussed the transformational work of the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI). Sir David spoke with experts from across the CCI partnership about the ground-breaking results that are being achieved through innovative, collaborative projects. At WCS, we are proud to be among the CCI partners. https://bit.ly/4dnWojZ
