On June 12, 2024, the District of Columbia Superior Court granted early release to our pro bono client, who was sentenced to 36 years to life when he was 18 years old. Like many DC inmates incarcerated in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, our client was confined to facilities hundreds and sometimes over a thousand miles away from family and friends. The team representing the client included associates Patrick Bradley, Lauren Weinberger, and Beth Wilson as well as summer associate Alyssa Fagel. Williams & Connolly secured a victory for CVS Health Corporation subsidiary Caremark LLC and related entities in an appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. On June 10, 2024, the Ninth Circuit affirmed the district court’s order granting the CVS Health entities’ motion to compel arbitration. The Ninth Circuit also rejected the Nation’s argument that the district court lacked subject-matter jurisdiction to compel arbitration, holding that the Nation waived its tribal sovereign immunity. The Williams & Connolly team representing the CVS Health entities included partner Sarah Harris and associates Kimberly Broecker and Libby Baird.
