In what the Women’s National Basketball Players Association president calls a “defining moment,” the association that represents all WNBA players announced on Oct. 21 that it has chosen to opt out of its current collective bargaining agreement. With counsel from a five-person advisory committee, including Willig, Williams & Davidson managing partner Deborah R. Willig, the association will seek an agreement that offers better working conditions and the players’ rightful share of the business they have built. The players have pledged to negotiate for as long as it takes to develop a business model that reflects their true value. #WNBA #CollectiveBargaining #WomensBasketball

A recent article on Law.com, originally published on Corporate Counsel, quoted individuals who compared striking workers to “ill-tempered,” “angry” kids. In a rebuttal featured in the same publication, Willig, Williams & Davidson attorney Erica Askin argues that workers fighting for their rights are far from behaving like children; they are parents of a society working toward a better future. We are proud to stand with working people as they create new standards for justice and fairness. #Strikes #WorkersRights #WorkersInspireUs

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (“ERISA”) offers broad protections for both pension and health benefits. It has been amended countless times since its enactment, often at labor unions’ urging. While there has been much progress over the years, it may be time for another major overhaul of benefits law and policy. In our latest blog, employee benefits attorneys Jim Beall and Louise Pongracz look back on the past 50 years of ERISA and explore what might be in store over the next 50 years of benefits for workers. #EmployeeBenefits #ERISA #PensionBenefits #HealthBenefits
