POLE PLANT – The number of pole pairs chosen for a particular rotor design varies based on required performance. Fewer pole pairs results in a lower required switching frequency which lowers core losses, improves efficiency and allows higher rotational speed. A higher pole count will require less back iron which reduces the outer diameter resulting in a smaller, lighter motor. The minimum requirement is 2 pole pairs. In general, higher pole count is used in larger diameter motors. In addition, higher pole count is used where minimizing motor package size and weight is critical, and/or where higher rotational speed is not necessary.
