About us

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) works for students, parents, educators, and citizens through the state's public schools and libraries. The department is led by an elected state superintendent. Agency headquarters are in Madison. Employees there provide services to Wisconsin school districts (administrative, teaching, and nutrition staff), cooperative educational service agencies, public libraries, and community organizations. Services include educational and infrastructure support such as budgeting, human resources, and information technology. Some department employees work in offices in Ashland, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Racine, and Wausau, providing direct services to students, encouraging them to remain in high school and to pursue post-secondary education.
