This past weekend, WisCorps was honored to attend the grand opening celebration of the Timberland Hills Trail system powered by One Track Mind Foundation(OTM). As our partner, OTM has provided Fall crews an opportunity for our Members to work on carving skilled courses to be used year-round while serving alongside Pathfinder Trails. The Timberland Hills trails system has 25+ miles of progressive single track trails. What makes this trail system truly unique is that it features trails for all abilities and all skill levels. It includes jumps, drops, berms, and rocks.

We love hearing the excitement in your voice! We're grateful for this Individual Placement partnership opportunity with City of La Crosse and know there's only great things to come of this position and the city's Climate Action Plan. Thank-you for your service, Leo Strand!
Sustainability Coordinator at the City of La Crosse; Student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Studying Environmental Studies & Political Science
I’m thrilled to announce my recent appointment as the City of La Crosse's Sustainability Coordinator through WisCorps! I will be serving under the Supervision of Lewis Kuhlman in the Planning Department to implement the goals of the city's Climate Action Plan. Having begun this role last week, I have only felt more empowered to create positive change and create a more sustainable, equitable, and vibrant La Crosse. Over the next 50 weeks, I’ll have the opportunity to immerse myself in city government and gain firsthand experience in the implementation of sustainable policies and initiatives. A huge thank you to AmeriCorps and WisCorps for making this opportunity possible!

We are quite proud of our Individual Placement at The Ridges Sanctuary, Inc. Albert has documented eight new species in Door County throughout his AmeriCorps service term. His project allowed for official documentation of red squirrels, Southern flying squirrels, Northern flying squirrels, house mice, masked shrews, white-footed mice, American deer mice and a pygmy shrew identification within the area. Albert said, “it was really cool to be able to add really important data, look at what I’ve done, replicate it and reference it.”

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses over 16,000 acres along the St. Louis River estuary. The Reserve is part of University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of Extension’s Natural Resources Institute with leadership from the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. It is part of the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. This year, our crew performed two weeks of restoration planting fieldwork on Islands within the St. Louis River Streambank. WisCorps planted over 7,500 seedlings in 5-6 species in wetland forests dominated by Black Ash. The St. Louis River estuary has large Black Ash forests, which provide critical and unique forested wetland habitats. Unfortunately, the invasive Emerald Ash Borer significantly impacts ash trees in the estuary. In addition to forested wetland habitat loss, as ash trees die, the increased light to the understory has fostered the proliferation of several invasive species, such as buckthorn and honeysuckle. The Reserve is working to remove invasive species and plant native tree seedlings under ash forests to help maintain the ecosystem and, to the greatest extent, provide the cultural services these important wetland forests provide. The Reserve received a four-year award, which has allowed our partnership. We stationed our first crew with the Reserve in the fall of 2022 and are incredibly grateful for the partnership. #EmeraldAshBorer #wetlandforests #invasivespeciesremoval #habitatrestoration #plantnative #nativespecies #treeplaning #trees #ecosystemrestoration #handsonconservation #conservationpractices #partnership #talentrecruitment #climateaction #climatework #environmentalrestoration #environmentalservices #landstewardship

We’ve recently been awarded a five-year Master Cooperative Agreement, which grants our Crew and Individual Placement Programs partnership opportunities with the National Park Service anywhere in the country. These projects are mission-critical, providing a tremendous opportunity to grow our programs by attracting top-tier talent, advancing our hands-on trail construction projects, expanding our habitat and ecosystem restoration work, deepening our data collection opportunities, widening our historic preservation practices, and strengthening our partnerships. Today, we're kicking things off with crews in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Later this month, we'll have crews in Isle Royale National Park! #MasterCooperativeAgreement #NationParkService #talent #toptiertalent #conservationmovement #conservationpractice #conservation #landstewardship #habitatandecosystemrestoration #opportunities #climate #preservationpractices #partnerships #programrecruitment
