Effective debriefing is a deliberate process that structures and supports learner reflection after a simulation event by having participants identify what they did, when they did it, how they did it, why they did it, and what they can improve on next time. In collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA), WISER developed the GAS Method of Debriefing to help instructors deliver a standardized debriefing experience that promotes self-reflection and self-discovery. Using this debriefing method, participants gather their perceptions about their performance during the scenario, analyze and reflect on their performance, and summarize the learning objectives and the lessons learned during the event. As a Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) fully accredited simulation center, it is part of our mission to contribute to the development and mentorship of the future generations of healthcare educators and researchers interested in developing and deploying simulation-based teaching programs. Hybrid simulation can be a cost-effective way to provide high-fidelity simulation-based healthcare training to learners. Most commonly, we utilize hybrid simulation when combining the use of the standardized patients with simulators or wearable task trainers. When used this way, participants have an opportunity to practice procedural and examination skills while simultaneously interacting and communicating with a more realistic patient. Our Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accredited Fellowship and Visiting Scholars Program provides one-of-a-kind learning opportunities for individuals interested in studying the application of simulation in healthcare education. One of our fellows, Dr. Advait Kothare, recently worked alongside subject matter experts to assist in teaching WISER's Emergency Physician Airway Management (EPAM) course. EPAM utilizes simulated cases to teach participants best practices for managing difficult airways that present in the emergency department, and Dr. Kothare illustrated patient safety focused intubation techniques for participating emergency medicine residents. Mock codes, or in situ simulations, are simulated events that can gauge and assess floor staff and the systems in place to care for patients. While they often take place in a real clinical environment, such as an ambulance, emergency room, or outpatient setting, mock codes rely on high-fidelity simulation that fosters an accurate representation of how care would be delivered to a real acute patient. At WISER, we work with hospital leadership to implement mock codes across the health system.
