The Voice of the Fixed Wireless and Fiber Broadband Industry.
About us
WISPA represents the interests of the evolving Internet service provider ecosystem: innovative entrepreneurial providers of fixed wireless and fiber broadband solutions to consumers, businesses, first responders and community anchor institutions. WISPs bring critical Internet access to millions of Americans in unserved and underserved rural, suburban and urban areas of the country, quickly and affordably, offering cost-effective, competitive and innovative service options where they did not previously exist. Our mission is to help small local innovators and entrepreneurs usher in the next wave of evolving connectivity solutions through a strong, vibrant, and participatory WISP community; promote state-of-the-art industry standards, technology and education; and advocate sound public policy which encourages investment, development and deployment of high-speed broadband to all Americans, no matter where they live. In short, WISPA seeks to build an environment where ISPs flourish, customers are happy, and communities grow through robust 21st century connectivity and competition.

"Other groups, including the Open Technology Institute at New America and WISPA, similarly raised concerns that NTIA’s proposed fiber-first hierarchy may hinder the program’s goal of achieving universal access efficiently and expeditiously." https://lnkd.in/eRZ_jRGx

The following statement may be attributed to Louis Peraertz, VP of Policy, WISPA – The Association for Broadband Without Boundaries: Washington, DC, September 10, 2024 – WISPA appreciates NTIA’s acknowledgement that “alternative technologies,” such as unlicensed fixed wireless (ULFW), will be necessary for states to maximize BEAD funding and realize “Internet for All.” The agency’s proposed guidance – which now enlists the support of ULFW providers who can meet BEAD baseline technical and other standards, and allows such providers to have more opportunity to seek BEAD subgrants – will directly result in more unserved communities coming online with affordable and reliable broadband access. NTIA’s proposal also will limit needless overbuilding of BEAD-compliant ULFW networks, both protecting public and private investment made to serve communities in the digital divide and making BEAD funds go even further. WISPA believes these proposals, along with specific recommendations WISPA has made to NTIA, will help BEAD succeed. We look forward to seeing NTIA’s final guidance so states have more tools and flexibility for their diverse BEAD deployments. Interesting op-ed in The Oklahoman > "It doesn't have to be this way. Spectrum is a public resource — so Congress should manage it in a way that promotes genuine competition and serves the public interest. "Smaller license sizes would create opportunities for rural carriers and innovative new entrants. Set-asides for smaller players can help level the playing field. Use-it-or-share-it rules can prevent spectrum hoarding. We should embrace new technologies that allow for more dynamic and efficient use of spectrum resources." https://lnkd.in/eaPY_eZt
The public airwaves belong to all of us. It's time to reclaim them for the public good
