  • News form The Factory - The end of working remotely Last week it was announced at The Factory that all administrative and office staff are to return to work in the office. No more working remotely either full time or hybrid. This was a bit of a shock as many had become accustomed to the extra freedom that working remotely allows. And by that I do not mean doing the minimum possible and enjoying untraceable time off as desired. The pros of working remotely have become more and more part of our working lives. We have a sense of being our own bosses and governing our own schedules. It was imposed on us during Covid when working remotely was not always an easy adjustment to make because social isolation and a sense of being adrift at sea were some of the initial consequences. The familiarity of going out to work was taken away and home felt like a cage even if a gilded one. The chats with co-workers were gone and we were very much on our own. But over time many people began to enjoy the experience, and productivity was as good as ever. So why the change of heart by business owners? I can only out this down to a sense of losing control. A feeling that maybe people are abusing the situation and not putting in the hours. For those owners who insist on paying full time administrative staff an hourly rate with people signing in and out each day, they felt that ‘their’ employees were not completing the hours required. Putting the time in. There was no way of knowing if they were being taken advantage of. That is what truly irks them. The trust just isn’t there. Did work efficiencies and productivity go down? Were bottom line numbers effected? Did things slip through the net? If the answer to these questions is yes, then perhaps working from home could be to blame. But if work was completed on time and productivity increased then it can only come down to a question of trust. I have heard it said in a kind of us and them scenario (us being the owners and them being the employees) that ‘they’ are out to screw us and take, take, take. That they are always asking for more. But let’s turn this around and we see that the employees also say the same. There is a an age old divide that exists and working in the office, filling chairs, seems at first to be the answer - a kind of ‘then we can see if they are really working’ attitude. So, the mistrust is still there, even today. Perhaps more modern companies are more aware of employee’s needs and especially the need to feel part of a team and of being contributors to the company. And of being trusted. Working from home is a privilege and needs to be earned and performance must be there. Like it always was. Let’s say Happy Employees Happy Life. I will keep you updated. Thoughts?

  • Today’s message at the ‘Factory’ was communication. Management did not feel that people were communicating often enough or clearly enough with each other and that this was leading to more and more mistakes and errors in the whole manufacturing process. So how much is enough? If a mistake happens, can we trace it back to miscommunication or to another cause? Are people afraid to communicate in case they lose face, or lose control? Or both? Or could it be that the communication process is there but there is no-one listening on the other end. There are two sides to every story but if there is a clear channel of communication that is used universally within a business this lack of communication will become less and hopefully so will the errors and mistakes. We all need to speak, and we also need to be heard. To err is human, so we can only strive to use the tools available to us and improve the flow of information as best we can. Thoughts?

  • Am I a CEO or a Glorified Employee? That is the question. I know some days it seems like the latter – some days to me just seem like putting out fires and being stuck in the day-today details. There is never time to sit and plan and dream anymore. Is it even possible to run my business like a CEO if I wanted to? I wish I could see all those itsy-bitsy details without getting caught up in them. Without feeling I have constant ADHD. IF only I could plan my day and track everyone else’s so I could get out of the mud and see the blue sky again.

  • TRUMP WOULD HAVE BEEN SAFE IF THE SECRECT SERVICE HAD WISPA Today, the Senate released a report that summarized there was a massive failure of communications regarding the Butler, PA assassination attempt on President Trump. More specifically they highlighted that the agents and departments operated in silos were not communicating with each other in real time. There were a host of issues leading up to the attempt. In just one example, the Secret Service sniper knew there was a problem 2 minutes before the shots were fired but their organizational deficiencies prevented them from getting Trump off the stage to safety. The Secret Services, and most likely many government departments, have similar issues that only become apparent when there is a tragedy that makes the news. You cannot put a “Band-Aid” on the problem. It is a root cause issue that needs to be addressed in the organization. Immediately, it brought to mind our Business Management System called Wispa, when used by any organization removes the silos and facilitates real time communication. These issues are a major source of lost productivity and breaking promises to customers. Wispa users don’t have these issues as silos are eliminated and members communicate with each other in real time via most popular platforms such as chat, email, text messages, and voice. The ball does not get dropped; the problem gets solved quickly.
