Visiting organic operations is always inspirational. We're so glad Organic Trade Association staff members could experience the Rodale Institute and all the other farm visits.
In early October, OTA staff from across the country came together in Lehigh Valley, PA, for a week-long retreat filled with farm tours, team-building activities, and opportunities to connect in person. Our time together was a unique chance for both longtime coworkers and new employees to deepen their collaboration and bond while learning more about the organic farming movement. 🌱 The retreat kicked off with a cozy campfire featuring organic s'mores made from member companies Mojave Mallows and Annie's Inc.. We then spent time at the Rodale Institute, learning about their trailblazing organic research, including the Farming Systems Trial and Vegetable Systems Trial, and meeting Matilda, a pasture-raised pig. From wagon rides to insights on organic apple research, it was a day full of inspiration! 🐄 We also had the chance to visit Wild Fox Farm, where Ben Davies shared his journey as an organic farmer and the challenges he faces with farm staff retention and changing consumer habits. We even got to meet the cattle and explore sustainable farming methods up close. 🌾 Our final stop was FarmerJawn, a 128-acre regenerative organic farm dedicated to providing food equity for underserved communities. Christa Barfield, Public Health Innovator, the CEO and founder, shared her vision for supporting Black and Brown farmers and the importance of shifting consumer perceptions around CSAs. This retreat was an unforgettable experience that reminded us of the critical role organic farming plays in the health of both people and the planet. California has new food date labeling laws, and the rest of the nation may soon follow suit. Starting July 1, 2026 in California, “BEST if used by” will signify peak quality, and “Use by” will indicate product safety. Consumer facing “Sell by” dates will be prohibited. Similar bills have been introduced in the US House and Senate. The changes are aimed clarifying information, and reducing food waste and the corresponding toll it has on the planet. #Labelstandards #useby #bestby #sellby #continuousimprovement #foodwaste

At a meeting organized by the Canadian Produce Marketing Association and the Compost Council of Canada, representatives from the International Federation of Produce Standards, the International Compost Alliance and the PLU (Price Look Up) label industry agreed to begin work to develop and adopt a global standard for compostable PLUs. The predominately noncompostable stickers are difficult to extract from the composting process and contaminate the finished compost, reducing its quality. Since the European Union plans to shift to compostable PLUs by 2028, the standard-setting effort has momentum. #PLUs #Labelstandards #compost #continuousimprovement #standardsdevelopment
