  • We’re thrilled to celebrate our third year of Women of Asphalt Virginia participating in the annual Pumpkin 4 Kids Project, which supports the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU! This year, our contribution was a cute, safety-themed unicorn pumpkin. At Women of Asphalt Virginia, we’re passionate about promoting safe practices for everyone working on our roads. We aim to highlight how critical safety is in the asphalt industry and reinforce our commitment to protecting the lives of road workers and the communities they serve. A heartfelt thank you to Sailaway Solutions for hosting this inspiring event every year, bringing together companies dedicated to making a difference and making children smile. Remember -- Stay Safe, and Stay Magical!🎃✨🚧

  • Happy WofA Wednesday and happy August! Today, we're featuring a member for the Member Spotlight—everyone say hello to Bakker Cullop from W-L Construction & Paving, Inc.! Get to know Bakker and what it means to her to be a woman of asphalt: ◼️How long have you been in the asphalt industry so far? I came to W-L Construction almost 8 years ago as an intern. Throughout college I was able to come back on breaks and help wherever needed. During those years, I worked in accounts receivable, as a receptionist, and in inbound inventory. I returned full-time in April 2021 as an accounts payable clerk and now work as an inventory accounting assistant. Having been trained in so many areas has really helped me to understand the ins and outs necessary to keep an office in the asphalt industry moving. ◼️What advice would you give young women entering your profession/organization? I have asked no less than 4 million questions during my time in the industry and still have so much more to learn. I’m a very inquisitive person, and in my eyes, one of the best aspects of being a young woman in this industry is that when you ask a question, the experienced men don’t assume that you’ll know what they’re talking about. They tend to thoroughly explain the process and allow me to ask follow-up questions. I’m still quite green on the asphalt production process, but I genuinely appreciate the patience and help offered to me. My advice would be - don't be afraid to ask questions and learn as much as you can. ◼️Have you drawn professional inspiration from other women? Tell us who has inspired you. I thoroughly enjoyed the Women of Asphalt: Lead and Inspire webinar, "One Woman's Journey from Field to Management," held in April. It featured Marquisha Williams, HR Area Partner/EEO Officer of Milestone Contractors LP. Marquisha’s story was one of overcoming adversity and maintaining her strong personal will. She knew what she wanted and was persistent in achieving her goals to rise as a hands-on laborer to her position now, which is truly inspiring. I encourage all women in the industry to tune into these insightful webinars featuring these inspirational women. ◼️How do you maintain work-life balance? I try to maintain work-life balance by keeping a daily planner. I’ve learned that whatever personal tasks I need to complete won’t be popping into my head and causing unnecessary stress throughout the workday if I have a scheduled slot to complete. I also try to get up from my desk and walk outside for short breaks throughout the day. A quick stretch in the sun gives me a burst of energy and motivation to go back inside and complete work tasks. After work and on weekends, I try to spend as much time in nature as possible. This helps me to clear my head and decompress and rejuvenates me for the next workday. Thank you, Bakker!! Keep leading and inspiring! #WofAVA #LeadandInspire #MemberSpotlight #wlconstruction #youngleaders
