FERN’s new episode of REAP/SOW offers a fascinating profile of the divers that clean, repair, and protect California’s complex water transport system. Listen to how these divers clear debris, prevent blockages, and maintain water infrastructure, all while underwater:
California transports water to Central Valley farmers through a complex network of reservoirs, aqueducts, and canals. This water system is controversial and, without constant maintenance, it might collapse. For REAP/SOW, reporter Lisa Morehouse, host of the “California Foodways” podcast, profiles California’s irrigation canal divers. Black and Indigenous communities have historically experienced land theft and dispossession, redlining, and food apartheid, causing a lack of access to healthy and culturally significant foods, among other negative impacts.
