RAFDI on the Hill! 🏛 Last week, RAFDI Director John Thon Majok, MPA spoke at the Congressional Caucus on Global Migration roundtable on Capitol Hill. This new caucus has been founded to address the root causes of forced migration globally, which Majok spoke to as the panel brought attention to the plight of the more than 117 million refugees and displaced people and the issues displacing them worldwide. RAFDI is grateful and honored for this opportunity to continue to bring attention to the root causes of displacement, and advocate for solutions for those who are forcibly displaced.

Meet our current Summer Intern, Rebecca (Becca) Avigad! Becca is currently pursing her Master's Degree in Public Policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her interests are in domestic and global reproductive health access, as well as gender and conflict. Since joining the Maternal Health Initiative in June, she has contributed to our program's work though our social media platforms, research and writing, supporting our recent events, and producing and editing content for the Dot-Mom column of the New Security Beat blog. We are grateful to have benefited from Becca's expertise and incredible work ethic this summer, and wish her the best in her second year of her degree!

In the coming decades, populations will shrink in regions that for the past half century have provided workers who have fueled the greatest spurt of global economic growth, technical innovation, and prosperity humankind has ever known. Rapid drops are expected in Asia and Latin America, while declines already underway in North America and Europe will persist. What does that mean for the global workforce? Economists and sociologists believe that to support current levels of global growth, the workforce needed to take us to the next level must come from a region expected to provide nearly the entire net increase of the world’s working age population over the next 20 years: the low- and middle-income nations of Africa. It was an honor and a pleasure to collaborate with longtime mentor and friend Tyler Marshall on a story about global workforce development for the latest issue of the WQ. The story took some interesting turns. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed reporting on this important topic. As the global population surpasses 8 billion, the world is facing a critical demographic moment with two defining characteristics. Many of the world’s largest economies, whose populations are aging and shrinking, are looking for ways to sustain productivity and growth. On the other hand, several regions have younger, often fast-growing populations eager for long-sought economic development and social advancement. These shifting dynamics have big implications for economies and political stability. Drawing on the Wilson Center’s leadership on demography, and with contributions from leading demographers and sociologists, the Wilson Quarterly examines the power and limits of population. Out now in The Great Population Shakeup. https://buff.ly/3WRe3M0 #PopulationShakeup #GlobalDemographics
