Our work with the inaugural NYC Mass Timber Studio (championed by our New York Regional Director Momo Sun, P.E., P.Eng.) exemplifies our mission at WoodWorks: to help project teams navigate the nuances of wood design and make impactful projects a reality. The studio, which involved a nine-month stretch of technical assistance for seven projects (across the city's 5 boroughs) in preliminary planning and design wrapped up last week. How is mass timber shaping the future of affordable multi-family housing? Our new paper, A Blueprint for Design, explores successful projects across the U.S., where developers have built mass timber homes for residents earning as low as 25% of the area median income (AMI). Learn how design efficiency, material optimization, and a holistic approach to cost savings are making mass timber a competitive choice in affordable and mixed-income housing developments. Last week, some of the WoodWorks team had the chance to tour Sterling Structural's impressive CLT manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Illinois. Thank you to Kevin Hsu, VP of Innovation, and Archie Landreman, Mass Timber Specialist, for showing us around! Between this location and their plant in Lufkin, TX, Sterling can produce 1,000 panels of CLT a day. Learn more about their products and projects, and get in touch on the WoodWorks Innovation Network (WIN): https://lnkd.in/ehuQzSMG #masstimber #masstimbersupply #wooddesign #woodproducts #manufacturing

Last month, WoodWorks Regional Director Eric Gu, PhD, PE, had the privilege of joining architects and engineers from Seattle and Portland on a tour of the Yakama Nation Forest and the Yakama Forest Products Sawmill. Read Eric's recap of the inspiring event below: "It was an extraordinary experience to see the landscape transition from the outskirts of Yakima at an elevation of 800 feet all the way up to 5,500 feet atop the fire lookout tower. In the Yakama Nation forestry lands, Tribal Forestry practices thinning every 25 to 35 years, depending on factors such as elevation, moisture, and growth conditions. Additionally, prescribed burns are often used to manage fuel, remove small trees, and clear unwanted low branches and bushes. Some open areas created by natural fires are typically left as habitats for wildlife. During one stop deep in the woods, I was struck by the sight of old-growth Douglas-Fir trees, some between 300 and 500 years old. A heartfelt thank you to Yakama Nation and the Department of Natural Resources for their dedicated stewardship of these renewable natural resources! At the Yakama Forestry Products sawmill, we explored both the original 1997 facility and the 2002 expansion, which can process logs up to 72 inches in diameter. Thanks to newly installed scanning and grading equipment, the mill now enhances the utilization and efficiency of the fiber produced. I want to extend a big thank you to the Yakama Nation, Yakama Forestry Products, AIA Seattle (Mass Timber Committee), The Department of Natural Resources, and everyone who joined us. Your insights and expertise made this tour an invaluable learning experience, and the engaging questions from attendees further enriched the visit. I look forward to future opportunities learn more about sustainability and forestry management of our land."
