Michelle Obama's DNC speech sparked North Carolina native and current Johannesburg resident Charles Belk to find his “Personal” and take action to turn out the vote. On Election Day, he encourages others to do the same. "Because believe me, you don’t want to wake up Wednesday morning, November 6, and realize it is too late and your whole world is now about to be completely different than it once was," Belk writes for Word In Black. "I encourage you to FIND YOUR PERSONAL this very moment and in the words of Michelle Obama…DO SOMETHING!" Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ggqrk8-e #WordInBlack #electionday #news

From limiting federal oversight to ensure civil rights protections and adequate education for students with disabilities to ending the data collection key to holding unscrupulous colleges accountable, EdTrust's Reid Setzer breaks down why eliminating the Department of Education could have devastating consequences for students throughout their academic journeys, from preschool through college. "It’s clear that the Department of Education is an essential part of the federal government. The next administration MUST keep ED intact — for the future of America’s students and the entire country," Setzer writes for Word In Black. Conservatives have long wanted a president to kill the DOE, a department that funds poor schools, helps Black students pay for college, and protects all students. We could get that with Project 2025 if Donald Trump wins the White House. https://lnkd.in/g8MP5jmW #WordInBlack #education #news #Project2025

Check out this important series from our digital editor. ⬇️ “Black, Out, and Proud” highlights joyful coming out stories from Black LGBTQ+ folks, their lessons, and how communities can better support them during these pivotal moments. #NationalComingOutDay
I often hear harmful coming out experiences shared online, especially from Black LGBTQ+ folks who have been ostracized from their families or communities after choosing to express their identity and live in their truth. While there is still much work to be done to address queerphobia in Black spaces, I wanted to explore the other side of the coin for #NationalComingOutDay. In “Black, Out, and Proud,” I dive into joyful coming out stories from Black LGBTQ+ folks, their lessons, and how communities can better support Black LGBTQ+ folks during these pivotal moments. Thank you to all of the sources for sharing your experiences with me. Thank you, Word In Black for giving me the space to curate this important series. Coming out is not a requirement for Black LGBTQ+ folks, but for those who wish to and are unsure when or how, I hope these stories remind you that you deserve to come out on your own time, to be seen, to be heard, and to be loved. Happy National Coming Out Day! Read the series here: https://lnkd.in/gpMkywNm
