Why our work matters.
I was fortunate enough to spend a day at the Monterey Design Conference in Asilomar last week. It was a wonderful time of reconnecting with college friends and peers, hearing and seeing inspirational leaders in the Architecture world and enjoying the gorgeous fall light amongst Julia Morgan masterpieces. Two of my favorite quotes from the day were: "Architecture is an applied art. It is neither the subject nor the result. Rather, the built work exists to set life in motion - in new and unpredictable ways." - Brad Cloepfil and Chelsea Grassinger from Allied Works Coupled with a humble but similarly veined story from Valery Augustin, AIA from DNA Architecture + Design. When he described walking into recently completed shelter and a young boy thanking him for building such a space, because he had spent his last two birthdays unhoused, there wasn't a dry eye in the place. Such lovely reminders of why our work matters. Workbench

We’re deeply honored that our Casa Azul project in Santa Cruz has been awarded the 2024 AIA California Design Citation Award! "A beautiful renovation and restoration of an important structure to add permanent housing for the previously homeless. The house was lifted to expand the square footage and increase the number of units. Extremely careful restoration of existing detailing, this seemed like a labor of love."
