What makes supporting SCIM in-house even more complex than SSO is the fragmentation that exists across customer onboarding, IdP implementation, and triage. For example, a user's email address, which is critical information needed for a successful SCIM integration, is not mandatory in many providers, leading to invalid events and more troubleshooting. This is just one of the many data fragmentation issues your application must solve as you evolve your SCIM solution. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZ9VxHic

One of the pitfalls of building SSO and SCIM from scratch is the ongoing engineering investment required to scale your solution — supporting more IdPs, dealing with expiring SAML certificates, and standardizing onboarding fragmentation. And this is after spending 3-6 months to develop the initial solution for a handful of providers. When factoring in feature expansion (domain verification, JIT provisioning, custom-mapped attributes, IdP role assignment), which is different from work related to maintenance and scalability, the total cost of ownership multiplies. Customer onboarding for SSO and SCIM is an often overlooked yet lengthy process that can take several hours to complete. The Admin Portal consolidates the back and forth between your engineers and the customer's IT admin into an easy-to-follow, self-serve process. It's also useful when renewing expiring SAML certificates, which can vary between 1 to 10 years across IdPs. For Indeed, the Admin Portal was one of the key reasons for choosing WorkOS over Auth0: https://lnkd.in/ezWVpp48

The latest episode of Crossing the Enterprise Chasm is with Cecilia Stallsmith, founder of Calyx Consulting and former director of platform marketing at Slack. She shares these GTM insights for developer products. 1. Fostering a healthy platform ecosystem: Building and maintaining an ecosystem is a messy process. For smaller companies building on top of bigger platforms, they must anticipate potential changes and new competition. Slack made it easier for the broader ecosystem by proactively communicating feature updates and maintaining a collaborative developer community. 2. Importance of brand experience for developers: Developers have an uncanny knack for noticing things that are even slightly off. Ease of using the API, examples included in the SDK, and even the intangibles like the look and feel of the product all matter. The Collisons at Stripe are well-known for being meticulous about their brand, and this is something that has to come top-down, starting from the founder. 3. Hiring your first GTM team: If you’re building your first content team, start with employees that are already doing this work. Write what their current responsibilities look like and scale the existing motion rather than artificially trying to bring in a marketer who is disconnected from the rest of the team. User deprovisioning is a critical use case for SCIM — ensuring that when employment status changes in the identity provider, access to apps and sensitive resources is automatically updated. But SCIM is a lot more versatile and can support these additional use cases: ▶ Pre-provisioning, which is more efficient than JIT provisioning ▶ User onboarding emails to solve discoverability issues for new employees ▶ Automated roles and permissions assignment using data that pre-exists in the IdP Read the full guide: https://lnkd.in/eAGuV4vZ
