With the new headquarters of the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have realized a model project for sustainable building in the Chinese business metropolis of Guangzhou. The high-rise features a natural ventilation system based on the solar chimney principle. Taking into account the conditions of the subtropical climate, the building was largely designed for natural ventilation. A facade with integrated photovoltaic louvers provides shade while contributing to sustainable energy generation. With 7,800 square meters of photovoltaic modules integrated into the façade and roof, the system produces approximately 650,000 kilowatt-hours annually, covering the building’s entire energy needs. These measures significantly reduce energy consumption compared to modern benchmark buildings. Additionally, all operational processes are continuously monitored through an innovative carbon management platform, the first in China to enable real-time forecasting of CO₂ emissions by time, zone, and category. Designs for Palas Iași development in Romania revealed. Foster + Partners is designing a green masterplan for Iași, a city in eastern Romania. The masterplan breathes new life into the land around the historic Palace of Culture, strengthening the relationship between the palace and the park, enhancing permeability and connections to the city centre, while creating vibrant shopping streets and extending the park with a variety of new public spaces and amenities. The project also reimagines the Palas Iași mixed-use development, reconnecting the buildings with their surroundings and creating a world-class retail experience for visitors. The practice has worked closely with the real estate developer, IULIUS, to develop the scheme. The neo-Gothic Palace of Culture is located at the centre of the masterplan. The practice’s design celebrates the palace by incorporating new landscaped areas, which unify both sides of the site, and creating a green entranceway from Stefan cel Mare Boulevard. The landscaping includes spectacular water features, sloping lawns, interactive play areas for children, and outdoor event spaces, which provide engaging and relaxing environments for visitors to spend time in. Archaeological remains and historic features are carefully preserved within the landscape for future generations. “The masterplan completely revitalises the heart of the city and improves connections to its centre with generous, tree-lined pedestrian walkways. Greenery and incredible new public spaces are woven through the urban realm, transforming the city experience and reframing the spectacular Palace of Culture.” Stefan Behling, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners. 🔗 Read the full article: https://brnw.ch/21wRCw3 #Architecture #Design #Innovation #Engineering #Construction #Romania

As part of the Anemos consortium Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, K-STUDIO, Arup, Leslie Jones Architecture, Triagonal - Information Design and Plan A Consultants Ltd have been appointed to design the expansion of Athens International Airport. The project will increase the capacity of the airport from 26 to 40 million passengers by 2032, through a phased programme, delivered within a live operational airport environment. Unifying the existing airport with new elements, across the main and satellite terminal buildings, is central to the design concept: an airport that reflects the past, present and future of the city. This is guided and informed by a response to the spirit of Athenian life, the architecture and materiality of Athens, and the celebration of a city that is ingrained with layers of time. Two new unforgettable Athenian moments in the terminal building are created by the north and south oculus - destination and dwelling points where passengers experience, in a Mediterranean garden, a microcosm of city life. Pragmatic in layout securing an ease of operations, efficient flows and intuitive wayfinding, this sense of place will pervade in the design, with a rich landscaping strategy, cohesive and natural materials, and an infusion of daylight to all parts of the terminal building. The project is targeting LEED Gold Standard. #airportdesign #aviationarchitecture #athens #reuse
