Climate change is fueling wildfires in Canada🌲🔥 The 2023 wildfires in Canada accounted for more than a 1/4 of all #TreeCoverLoss globally that year and were largely driven by unusually hot temperatures and low precipitation. Québec, Northwest Territories, Alberta and British Columbia all experienced record high tree cover loss due to fires in 2023. Though #forestfires in #Canada and other northern boreal forests are a common and natural occurrence, drier, hotter conditions caused by climate change are leading to fires that are larger and more frequent than in past decades. Read the new analysis from Global Forest Watch about how these #wildfires had a massive effect on greenhouse gas emissions▶️ https://bit.ly/4bkZqof

About us
The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining. The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

Local voices, local people, local knowledge drives landscape restoration from the ground according to WRI’s Dr Susan Chomba🌱 In May, hundreds of thousands of people across #EastAfrica were displaced from their homes by severe flooding. Could #landscaperestoration help people adapt and build resilience for the future? 🫘At least 3 billion people across the world are affected by #landdegradation. In #Kenya, land degradation and #deforestation have led to severe impacts on local communities such as agricultural lands losing their ability to produce enough food and #floods. 🌳#Africa has 750 million hectares of land ready for landscape restoration. Locally led restoration efforts are 6-20X more likely to achieve long-term success and Restore Local is working with thousands of champions across Africa to revive these critical ecosystems. In addition to harming biodiversity and ecosystems, wildfires also threaten water security🌳🔥💧 Over 2/3 of the world’s drinking water comes from forested watersheds. 33 of the world’s 105 largest cities and many smaller cities and rural areas rely on these forests. Forests enhance water infiltration and reduce erosion, preventing sediment and pollutants from reaching crucial water sources. After wildfires, fewer trees mean more runoff, unstable soil, and increased sediment, ash, and pollutants in our lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.
