Just wrapped up two insightful days at the 2nd Ship Recycling Lab with James Corbett. It was incredibly exciting to connect with people from a variety of sectors, including those from the ship recycling field, NGOs, shipowners, the steel industry, tech innovators, and the finance sector - all sharing their unique perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of ship recycling.♻️🚢 The discussions delved into the latest technological advancements, financial models to support sustainable practices, and how the circular economy and ship recycling can be connected. We explored how collaboration across these sectors can drive innovation and create practical solutions for sustainable ship recycling. 🌱Continued dialogue and collaboration are essential to turn these ideas into real-world actions. 🤝 A big thank you to the NGO Shipbreaking Platform for putting together such an insightful event! There has been clear progress in negotiations at #MEPC82, and we are encouraged to see that the key industry priorities of a feebate and closing the price gap between green fuels and fossil fuels are considered critical going forward. International Maritime Organization member states recognize that the core purpose of the mid-term measures is to drive the energy transition in the fleet, but there is much work remaining to get there. 🌱🚢 🇺🇳 We will continue to work with all parties for an ambitious and cost-effective measure, and the models put forward in the #GreenBalanceMechanism can provide viable tools for use in the forthcoming agreement. ✅ Our focus remains on ensuring that mid-term measures will close the price gap between green fuels and fossil fuels, that the full climate impact of fuels from well-to-wake is taken into account, and that regulations drive investment in green fuel production by encouraging the use of deep #GHG reduction fuels. We look forward to working with the parties on developing effective mid-term measures that will incentivize the use and production of green fuels so that shipping can reach #NetZero2050, in a way that ensures a just and equitable transition. ✅ Watch video interview with WSC's Bryan Wood-Thomas on the outcomes of MEPC82 at the IMO.

It was a pleasure to meet Joe Appiott representing the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. We were both attending the International Maritime Organization International Maritime Organization 82nd meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82). Fellow University of Delaware Blue Hens worked on different parts of IMO's MEPC 82 meeting agenda this week. As we served the international efforts at IMO, we got to share a coffee, and recall our shared time working and learning in School of Marine Science and Policy at UD. Great to see you, Joe! Today is #WorldMaritimeDay 2024 🇺🇳🚢 This year marks the 50th anniversary of the International Maritime Organization's International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) treaty. This convention is the bedrock in setting international safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation, preventing maritime disasters and protecting lives. The World Shipping Council will continue to explore and implement preventive measures to ensure a safe workplace for seafarers and on-shore transport workers, focusing on cargo safety, the safe handling of containers, reducing container fires and containers lost at sea. Our WSC CEO Joe Kramek, together with Damian Viccars and Felix Sames, recently met with key stakeholders in Brussels, including representatives from the European Commission, European Parliament, and other industry organizations, to underscore the vital role of liner shipping for the future of Europe's competitiveness. 🚢 🇪🇺 Key discussions focused on: 1. The urgent need for the #EU to lead global efforts on #GHG reduction and accelerate the implementation of the EU Green Deal. ✅ 2.
