Earlier this week, I was invited to the WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION Commonwealth Agenda at the House of Lords—an event that was not only inspiring but also full of open discussions and powerful insights from several influential speakers. The packed schedule tackled some of the biggest challenges millions of women and girls face globally, leaving us all both motivated and reminded of just how much work still needs to be done. One of the highlights was HRH Princess Beatrice sharing a few heartwarming anecdotes about her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and remarking, “Growing up, I thought women ruled the world!” 💪

Almost a year ago I met Rupa Dash and what started as a whatsapp chat about doing a conference on the Commonwealth actually materialised this week. Was it what we hoped for? Absolutely yes! Was it impactful and powerful? Unequivocally yes! Why? Because from its inception it was to challenge ourselves that we need to be fearless if we are to create good for our Commonwealth sisters. So how did we go about it? As the U.K. representative for WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION, the heavy lifting was understandably mine to activate the vision. My role model Baroness Sandy Verma very kindly agreed to be our sponsoring peer. Rupa and I chose the date to be ahead of CHOGM - Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting. Then it was the usual things many of us are familiar with in event scoping, building and delivery. But it was a labour of love for me all the way. We can in our privilege and power create much to be proud of. I will write a blog with my reflections but I want to thank all - including my team - who were part of this magical communal event. Much has been written which has filled me with delight that the inaugural World Woman Commonwealth Agenda brought the bold and best power of sisterhood we women have for each other. It was thought provoking to hear Professor Geeta Nargund and Ritu Hinduja-Chhabria reflect on health inequality. And to hear Nicola Hodson share what IBM is doing for female empowerment. It also surfaced male allyship. I was proud my son, Daniel Taylor - who came to the podium along with Emma Andrews’ daughters - shared that Madeleine Albrights’ famous quote applies to men also - and he believes there should be a special place in hell for men who don’t support women! It was a privilege to hear Bharat Lal talk about the work being done to help Indian women access education and the labour market by addressing infrastructure barriers. A huge shoutout to Philip Robinson, my male ally on my BBC WiSTEM board who worked with me to bring the BBC on board as a media partner which paved the way for my BBC Colleagues to join. I am so incredibly proud of their expertise and knowledge. Thank yous to the BBC’s Romana Pugh; Justin Rowlatt; Marc Cieslak; Flora Carmichael; Sarah Asante; Laura Ellis; Petra Abbam; Emily Buchanan. Also to Eleanor Mills, Gabriella Di Laccio, Eva Appelbaum and more. It was great to hear Helen Thomas - the BBC’s Head of Radio 2 - talk about how representation matters off air as well as on. Also to hear from Elisabeth Mainelli about the work to make safer cities for women. I end with quotes which captured the zeitgeist: “I am the first… but I will not be the last” A rallying call to action from Baroness Scotland HRH Princess Beatrice said “Growing up I thought women did rule the world!” a poignant nod to the great late Queen Elizabeth Host Baroness Sandy Verma said “Don’t treat yourself second best.” Dr Linda Yueh CBE said “If you don’t have a chair at the table, bring your own chair.”

“I grew up thinking that women ruled the world” 👑 HRH Princess Beatrice York Yesterday Women on Boards CIC® attended the inaugural WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION event at the UK House of Lords. Invited by the formidable Lalita Taylor FRSA and Rupa Dash and hosted by the amazing Baroness Sandy Verma - we were welcomed into a room full of drive, passion and conversation. The many panelists and speakers, together with keynote Speaker HRH Princess Beatrice focussed on a broad range of topics including leadership, role models, climate change, AI and innovation. New connections made, insightful forward-thinking conversations held and most importantly, we gained a new understanding to the Commonwealth and it’s global impact. Great to meet new connections and also see familiar faces. So much to digest, reflect and read about, none moreso than hearing from the inspirational Baroness Scotland who empowered the room with every spoken word building wealth and resilience to women around the world - a point that highly resonates with Women on Boards CIC®. Thank you Lalita for the invitation, we hope to support collectively towards an equitable future for women. #commonwealth #houseoflords #newconnections Sandra Wiggins Payal Walker Abby Ghafoor Tobias Gould Jeremy Zwiegelaar, PhD Eileen Perry (Richards) MBE DL Nurjahan Khatun Ashreen Seethal Jen Fensome Alexandra Winward Tabitha Morton UN Women UK Poonam Sharma Barclays Eagle Labs Lalita Taylor FRSA Rupa Dash BBC WORLD WOMAN FOUNDATION
