How Can Churches and Communities Respond to Random Acts of Violence? St. Augustine Priest Stabbed in Downtown Attack Rev. Matt Marino, the rector of Trinity Parish Episcopal Church in St. Augustine, is recovering after being stabbed in an unprovoked attack while having coffee downtown on Wednesday morning. The St. Augustine Police Department issued an alert shortly after the 8 a.m. attack, and a 22-year-old woman was later apprehended and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and battery. Jail records reveal she has faced similar charges in recent years. The assailant first confronted a McDonald's employee, brandishing a knife before encountering Marino and another individual outside a coffee shop. Without warning, she reportedly said, "Excuse me, sir," before stabbing Marino, causing serious injuries, including a punctured lung. Marino received immediate medical assistance from EMTs, who were credited with saving his life. In response, Trinity Parish sent a statement to its members, putting the church on temporary lockdown as a precaution. The Episcopal Diocese of Florida also released a statement expressing gratitude to first responders and calling for prayers for Fr. Marino, his family, and the parish community. The incidents reportedly occurred from April 2023 to April 2024, during which Thomas allegedly misused a church credit card to transfer money to a shell company and then to his personal accounts. Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department confirmed that the misuse of funds was identified while Thomas was employed by the church. Thomas, a member of the Working Families Party, was elected to the Hartford Court of Common Council in November 2023 and has served since January. Ronald Johnson, Thomas’ attorney, declined to comment on the allegations, stating that he had not yet reviewed the arrest warrant. Thomas is scheduled for a court appearance on October 29. Good News Story Massachusetts Police Officers Operate Ice Cream Truck to Serve Community In an innovative approach to community policing, the Chicopee Police Department in Massachusetts has taken to the streets with a sweet twist: operating an ice cream truck. Officer Travis Odiorne initiated the idea, aiming to bridge the gap between the police and the community. The department purchased a used truck off Facebook Marketplace and transformed it using funds from asset forfeiture. The truck, wrapped with the slogan "to protect ... and serve ice cream," has become a popular fixture at local events and parks, offering free ice cream to children. This initiative not only delights the kids but also fosters a positive image of law enforcement. The officers, including Johnny Jusino, Sgt. Man Charged After Stabbing Outside Kansas City Church A homeless man, Jarod Hill, has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action after allegedly stabbing a church member outside the Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene on Sunday. The incident unfolded after Hill accused the church’s emergency response team of lying about surveillance footage related to his claim that his tent on the church's property had been spray painted. According to court documents, Hill became agitated after being told to leave the premises when the surveillance footage showed no evidence of his tent being vandalized. While a church member was assisting Hill by looking up directions to a laundromat, Hill allegedly placed the member in a headlock and began stabbing him in the chest with a knife. Another church member intervened, attempting to prevent Hill from further attacking the victim. Despite attempting to use a firearm to subdue Hill, the gun was not loaded. Five witnesses managed to disarm Hill and held him until police arrived at the scene.
