On July 7th, I ended up in the ER with acute appendicitis – it was brutal. Years ago, an emergency like this would’ve brought my business to a standstill. But these days, I run a true lifestyle business. My goal is to make enough money to live the life I want for me and my family while doing something I love. I feel no pressure to scale to $10mm or $100mm and I like the flexibility that my business model gives me. When I first started, I was doing everything. Creating content, marketing, selling, bookkeeping, training, coaching, onboarding new clients, creating back office systems, marketing and social media. I was working 80-90 hours a week. It was exhilarating, exhausting and highly unsustainable. I was the bottleneck. If I wasn’t there, nothing happened. As my revenue grew, I focused on what I loved and was good at, and figured out what I hated and sucked my energy. My goal was to get to the place where I only did the things I loved and delegated everything else. Here are a few actions that I took: First, I hired an executive assistant from Worxbee for back office tasks like managing my calendar, onboarding, CRM updates, payments, and podcast uploads. This freed me up to focus on selling, coaching, and training. Next, I brought on a bookkeeper to manage my cash flow and taxes. Then, I hired a marketing team for marketing strategy and content. They’ve driven new revenue and lifted that burden off me. I realized that the next biggest threat to my business was keeping the training going even if I’m away. I was lucky to reconnect with John A. Polumbo, an excellent trainer and coach. John is a consummate professional and my clients love him. This whole system was put to the test about 3 weeks ago when I had an emergency appendectomy on Saturday night. I’d just returned from vacation and was ready for a busy catch-up week. Instead, a difficult recovery kept me out of the office for two more weeks. I couldn’t even manage a Zoom call, let alone sales calls, content creation, coaching, or training. But here’s the thing: My business kept running without me. My marketing team continued delivering great content. My assistant, Quelina Jones, kept clients informed and rescheduled meetings. John handled much of my training calendar. The business ran smoothly for three weeks without me. No clients left, four new sales calls were scheduled, checks kept coming in, and content kept rolling out. This emergency was a stress test for my business, and we passed with flying colors. Thanks to my team for stepping up and my clients for their patience. So my advice to you from this experience would be: Think about the parts of your business that drain your energy or satisfaction. What can you delegate, and what must you handle yourself? How would your business fare if you were out for 3 weeks or more?
