About us
WQED Multimedia starts conversations & creates experiences that educate, entertain & inspire our neighbors in Pittsburgh & across southwest PA. Founded in 1954 as an experiment in educational community-supported television, WQED was a forerunner to PBS. Our content creators produce impactful stories that delve into the rich mosaic of our region’s past, present, and future. We cover a wide range of topics, from arts and culture to pressing societal issues that impact our lives. We profile remarkable individuals and organizations who work to strengthen our communities. Our Learning Neighborhoods support children, in partnership with area schools and libraries, and extend to high school students exploring media careers through the WQED Film Academy. Known as "The Voice of the Arts," WQED-FM provides a vital platform that amplifies our vibrant and diverse cultural assets, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. WQED Multimedia operates WQED-TV (PBS); WQED World; WQED Create; WQED Showcase; WQED PBS KIDS Channel; Classical WQED-FM 89.3/Pittsburgh; Classical WQEJ-FM 89.7/Johnstown; the Pittsburgh Concert Channel; plus various streams, apps, and interactive experiences.

“We set off to make a show about the outdoors, but it's really about people,” Baratunde Thurston told WQED members at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens last month. America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston “is a nature show that's about us and our connection to nature,” Thurston said. “Sure, we have slow motion shots of manatees, but mostly, this is me connecting with other humans who are themselves connected to this Earth....” 🌿 Check out more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eCunrPs6 Special thanks to Richard King Mellon Foundation for financial support, and to these partners who joined our event: Tree Pittsburgh, Venture Outdoors, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, Bike Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PITTSBURGH MAJOR TAYLOR CYCLING CLUB

WQED is honored to be among those awarded. ⭐ The National Endowment for the Arts grant will support teaching artist wages and salaries for the WQED Film Academy media arts education program. WFA’s team of industry professional teaching artists are the core of the program who guide, mentor, and educate students. Teaching artists engage with local schools and community organizations both on location and in our Oakland studios to teach workshops and/or semester-long classes in digital media arts, host field trips and camps, as well as providing professional development and technical consultation to enhance educators' digital media skills, help them choose equipment, or embed digital media production into existing curriculum.
The National Endowment for the Arts is excited to announce our second round of funding for FY24 to support projects in all U.S. states and jurisdictions! As NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson noted in the press announcement, “So many aspects of our communities such as cultural vitality, health and well-being, infrastructure, and the economy are advanced and improved through investments in art and design, and this funding at the local, state, and regional levels demonstrates the National Endowment for the Arts’ commitment to ensuring people across the country benefit.”
