Climate change impacts people in different ways depending on who they are and how their identify influences their position in society. 🔷 People living with disabilities are more likely to be negatively affected during floods 🔷 During storms, men are often actively helping others, putting them more at risk 🔷 Small-scale farmers are negatively impacted by drought due to the loss of plants and animals 🔷 Fisherwomen, with less access to boats, equipment and cash, are more impacted by warming oceans causing declining fish stocks Recent evidence shows that Nature-based Solutions for adaptation are more effective when delivered in a gender-responsive and socially inclusive manner. Our new booklet provides practical tips on how to recognize differences in needs and priorities to ensure that everyone can benefit from NbS for adaptation. Did you know the global transport sector is the second-fastest-growing source of GHG emissions? 🚗💨 Next-generation #NDCs offer a key opportunity to reshape transportation by setting ambitious, context-specific targets. Governments need to aim for fossil fuel-free land transport and energy usage reductions to help meet 2030 net-zero goals. This transition is critical for human health, safety, and the planet. Learn how transport in NDCs can drive climate progress from WRI Climate: https://bit.ly/4gGWyGd

Urban Transformation: Insights from the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities Prize for Cities 2023-2024 Finalists Learning about smart cities, I had the opportunity to attend my first event at the Yale School of the Environment, hearing about transformative urban initiatives in Argentina, India, Norway, and the USA. While fascinated by these projects' impact on the community, the initiatives showcased the integration of complex solutions with straightforward solutions to tackle urban challenges. Here are my key takeaways: Complex Solutions, Simple Execution: Effective solutions appreciate both the complexity of challenges and the simplicity of actionable steps 🔄. Community at the Core: Every significant change begins with the people. It’s crucial to engage, start discussions, and dive deep into community needs 👥. Beyond Implementation: The real impact of urban transformation lies in maintenance and scalability. It’s not just about starting; it’s about sustaining and expanding 🔗. Incremental Innovation: Don’t lose yourself in the complexity of problems. Start small, test ideas, and adapt strategies based on what works 🛠️. Reflecting on strategies for smart city initiatives, I've come to understand that the most effective solutions are those that combine straightforward, community-focused actions to tackle urban challenges in a sustainable and scalable manner. https://lnkd.in/ezHUp2aJ

🌡 Our #cities will see more heatwaves, and harsher heatwaves in the future. The difference between 1.5C and 3C has life or death consequences for billions of people around the world. It will mean a world in which cities face longer + more frequent heatwaves, greater disease risk. As well as more risk of droughts, followed by extreme rainfalls. And? Of course this will mean a higher demand for cooling and air conditioners - skyrocketing electricity demand. How the future of our cities will look is up to us. This report from WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities can only be (yet another) wake up call. World cities will face longer heatwaves, greater disease risk and “skyrocketing” energy demand for cooling, according to a new report on post-industrial global warming of 1.5C to 3C, which the planet is on track to reach.
