The #Amazon is a global #biodiversity hotspot and crucial climate regulator. Yet, its cities need financial support and capacity building to foster sustainable, conservation-oriented urban green spaces. In a dedicated session at ICLEI World Congress 2024, mayors from Amazonian cities united to amplify their voices and address #sustainability challenges. These cities, home to 72% of the Amazon's population, face unique hurdles in public administration, services, and connectivity. “Talking about the Amazon refers to a region that is an international brand known worldwide… [that] simultaneously suffers from systematic invisibility due to the lack of policies aimed at its development,” said Edmilson Rodrigues, Mayor of Belém, Brazil. #ICLEI South America is supporting Belém to create its first greenhouse gas inventory and promoting ecosystem-based adaptation. Our work with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) and the Belém Declaration aims to institutionalize Amazonian cities as part of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization - ACTO. During the session, Mayors also emphasized the need for national and international cooperation for environmental projects and technical training to rebuild the Amazon, especially since deforestation and urban migration worsen environmental problems. Sustainable development projects, technical training, and adding value to natural resources are essential for a resilient future.
