Established in 1918, WSSC Water is currently among the largest water and wastewater utilities in the nation, with a network of nearly 6,000 miles of drinking water pipeline and over 5,600 miles of sewer pipeline. Our service area spans nearly 1,000 square miles in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, and we serve 1.9 million residents through approximately 475,000 customer accounts. WSSC Water drinking water has always met or exceeded federal standards.

Today, General Manager & CEO, Kishia Powell accepted $1.6 million to help residents w/ failing septic systems connect to our award-winning wastewater collection system; saving residents thousands of dollars by covering the cost of extending sewer lines to their homes. Connecting homes with failing septics to our sewer system will aid in our collective efforts to improve the health of local waterways, ultimately protecting our beloved Chesapeake Bay. Thank you Global Water Intelligence (GWI) for amplifying our message about the funding gap for water and the extreme disparity in funding between the water sector and the transportation sector. This particular graphic was part of a presentation to communicate why there are affordability challenges for our customers. This graphic depicts our situation, and was a companion to the graphic in your post which is for our local transit agency. Though they are experiencing a gap as well, their budget is supported by millions in subsidies that water utilities just don’t recieve.
